Factory Panel Defect

A few days ago after cleaning the outside of my Jeep, I noticed this. It's like a little bump or pimple under the paint. It is located in front of the front passenger door. My OCD has kick into full gear and every time I walk by my Jeep it sticks out like Mount Everest. I couldn't capture it in a still picture so I made a video.

Do you think this is fixable without having to repaint that panel? I have a detailer friend, who hasn't seen it yet, say it should be fixable without any major work. Your opinions?

Thanks!

Ant, that would bug the crap out of me, too. That looks like a simple fix for a PDR guy. Videon should handle it for you, but I'd worry about the expertise of their shop to perform paintless dent removal... Hopefully, they have a mobile guy who frequents the lot and it's not one of their detail guys with a rubber mallet

Re: Factory Panel Defect

Assuming that the screw or whatever caused that out-ding is not still pressed up against that panel it may be able to be fixed by a good body guy but the sharpness may be an issue. You really have no option but to live with it or roll the dice and let the dealer body shop have a crack at it that way they "own" the outcome. Just have to be prepared for a non-factory repaint of the panel which I am sure you know those potential "issues". If it were me I would have them fix it and get out my prayer beads.

While not a body surface defect this is the hood paint defect I rejected on an in stock '14 Summit Granite Crystal as I just could not live with a re-paint day one on the friggin' hood for a car I was going to drive into the ground. I just let them sell it to someone who didn't notice or care and I ordered me a red one and won the paint/body defect lottery

Yeah that's what I am hoping. This is driving me crazy! PS: I got the front windows tinted to match the rear. I love the look, but there is the tiniest little pinhead of a bubble in the tint that I focus on every time I look out the window. It is barely visible, but I have issues lol. The tint guy said he would re-tint the window if I wanted him to but it is really impossible to have a perfect tint job. He said there will always be a bubble somewhere and if he redid it, it could be worse. It really looks nice though!

I remember you pointing this out when it happened. It made me obsess over checking the paint on the hood. It does do some weird clouding when I look at it. Really hard to describe but I am just starting to think it's part of the Granite Crystal look because every Granite Crystal on the lot did the same thing. Maybe it just reflects the sky in a weird way. Still trying to figure it out. I see it mostly on the front edge of the hood.

Re: Factory Panel Defect

I actually like that slight flip/flop effect or whatever it is about the granite cyrstal but this was a big time run down the center hood bump. When I approached the car from the front it was like a punch in the stomach when I walked up. I tried to make it "go away" with different viewing angles as it was a bright sunny day but no go.

We had a golf-balled sized hail storm in 2010 and when I was in the dealer getting my car estimated for dent repairs ($6,300 no joke) I watched the dent guy work absolute magic on a similar car. Those guys are artists.

Be sure to show us "after".

Damn, tint looks good. I miss being able to have tint and not get hassled.

Re: Factory Panel Defect

The paintless dent removal guys (they really make their money chasing hail storms....I know a guy and he travels the country chasing hail storms) can work magic. Make sure you get a really experienced guy since this is a protrusion versus almost all of their work are on dents inward from hail and door dings. At the minimum, they should be able to massage out the dent so it is 90% gone and perhaps 100%.

Thanks! I'm really happy that I got it done. So far the only thing the police have said to me was how nice it looks. Score!

I went to the dealer on Thursday and saw their dent guy. 15 minutes later and it completely vanished. I was really amazed at how easy he made it look. A few taps on the outside of the panel and then a few taps on the inside and poof! You would never know it was ever there.

That's COMPLETE BS. Both my car, my wife's car, and several other family members car are all tinted, and have NO defects.

My wife's car came back with several small bubbles, I made them re-do it. You're paying for it, have them do it right or go to a better shop that is ABLE to do it right. No way in hell would I accept that.
