Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

That sucks. I'd be pissed if I were in that position. I'm really hoping my 8spd doesn't have those issues.

Based on the reviews on here, more people seem to be having issues with the transmission in the V6s than the V8s. I could be incorrect, but with the transmission flash only coming to V6 owners I would think that was one of the problems.

If there are problems with the V8 transmissions, I haven't seen too many threads on them on JG. I know this is a small sample size, but it's all i have to compare to.

I would say there are a lot more V6s represented here than V8s and yes the sample size is way to small to make a judgment that you seem to be making. My transmission has been flawless so far as they are for the larger majority of V6 and V8 owners. Knock on wood.

X5 is too much money...the X3 is a chick car, so's the smaller Audi SUV. I won't touch anything from GM, and I'm not too keen on the Ford Explorer, Edge or Escape. The only Nissan I'd consider is another Xterra if they redesigned it (and gave it a diesel), and the 4 Runner looks like crap.

I hate to say it, but if gas stays below $4.00 a gallon, I may opted for a full size pickup...maybe the new F-150 when it comes out...with the EcoBoost.
I share your sentiment on alternative cars pretty much to a T. My other car is a 2000 4Runner which to this day runs like a champ. I seriously considered buying another 4Runner over the JGC but didn't like the look of the newer 4Runners.

I invested (I use the term loosely) $4K in stealthy audio upgrades in my JGC and although it's a sunk cost, I'm hesitant to move on because of it. Another alternative I'm considering is keeping my 4Runner (I had planned to sell it) and buy a car.

Your wrong, most of the transmission complaints are with the V6 and thats what I would have expected. Most with the V8 are happy with the transmission.

Most people are happy with V6 8 speed too! The few on any forums are not an accurate representation of any model or veh sold.

Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

Chrysler has already acknowledged a problem with the Chrysler made tranny that is bolted to all the V6s. The tranny bolted to the V8s are German made.

There is a TSB which involves a software flash for the V6 only. Some are reporting major improvement while other's here have reported it is better, but still not great.

"German made" is not what it used to be. Sophisticated design, for sure, but all CAD/CAM, too compex and too little time for live testing.

That may well be true. My point was that they are using two different transmissions, both designed by the same company, but built in different locations. Only one has had enough complaints, so far, to warrant any kind of action.

I expected that because thats the one chrysler got their hands on and modified. The V8 unit is still made by ZF. The V6 is the one with the tsb for the reflash because of the shifting issues so its clear that is the one they are having more complaints about.

Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

The 8 speed ZF made transmission is used in a lot of other cars. I am not sure why it is so problematic with the JGC. I guess it is the software that each individual car company programs it that may be the issue.

See the following:One Transmission, Countless Cars: The ZF 8HP Eight-Speed - Popular Mechanics
