Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

I don't now, nor have I ever worked for Chrysler. My JGC was built on April 6th and delivered to me on April 13th. I haven't had it to the dealer since that day. My transmission shifts fine. The rest of the vehicle is performing beautifully. I very rarely take it out of eco mode. I've been on a number of road trips, some lasting up to a week. Very fond memories of those. I've had it off road, and it did everything I asked of it. My day to day driving is red light to red light city traffic. It drives as well as anything I've owned its size and weight. I understand there are those of you that are not satisfied with this vehicle, for what ever reason. I'm not minimizing your problems, they are very real to you. I'm sure Chrysler can improve this vehicle, and the way it drives. That's what any good manufacturer does. I'm certain there is nothing I can say that will change the minds of those who are unhappy with there JGC. I'm only posting here to give a "fair and balanced" view of this vehicle. I'm sure there are thousands of happy owners of this vehicle who don't find it necessary to come to a forum to either praise or punish Chrysler. I got involved with Jeep Garage when I was first looking at purchasing my JGC to learn what I could. I've stayed here because I've made friends here that have an interest in this vehicle, and like to share this interest with each other and any one else who wants to participate. I'm truly sorry that there are owners who are not sharing my very happy experience with their Jeeps. I understand your frustration, I've owned some real crappers in my day. I just hope you can get your problems resolved. I've spent a lot of time here lately defending Chrysler because my experience has been positive. I won't bore you anymore with these arguments. I'll be here monitoring the forum, and adding any info that I deem useful, but no more preaching. Good luck to you all.

I'm sure it changes the most immediately after it's cleared.

After a week or so it sees less and less difference in driving and has nothing to change.

You could argue how long that period is. But I'm sure it's there.

Maybe it's only an hour, maybe a month.

Once it has adapted enough it starts to run like sh$t in eco mode.
When it has no adaptive info, it runs good. I suspect this is what most people are seeing after the upgrade.

Clear it and it will run ok for another week.

It's just like clearing your average mpg (which is also "ongoing"). At first you see lots of wide swing in values then over time it takes more to move it.

I should have written "while it does the bulk of its learning" rather than "in learning mode". Effectively the same thing.

Jp467,
Thanks for the correction. Should have said "glad to see that some of the dealerships that sell and service Jeeps don't even stand behind the products they sell." I don't mean any offense to chrysler employees or dealers in general. Just frustrated with the lack of response from my local dealer in particular.

Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

I think one issue with modern gearboxes is that people forget that these things adapt to driving conditions. The box has to learn what driving conditions you expect. It takes time. They can't read you mind... yet! One can't drive leasurly down a freeway then floor it up a windy mountain pass and expect it to suddenly change modes. After I hitch or unhitch the trailer, for the first few k's, the gearbox is rather clunky but then settles down and runs like a dream. I don't race off to the dealer complaining of it being clunky. Understand your machine and most problems just go away!

And because this is "The Jeep Garage", I can only make positive posts or outright lie that my 2014 GC is running great?

I don't think a video would help my case, it's something you feel while driving or being a passenger. If anyone is out in my neck of the woods, they're welcomed to a ride so they can experience it themselves. While they're at it they can witness the noises from back when going over bumps. Since I took delivery April 21th, maybe this has something to do with it...being an early build and all.

Like I stated earlier, after a cold start (and after the latest reflash) the tranny sticks in first & over revs...hunting around for a gear, and once warmed up, it will roughly downshift into the lower gears...especially in stop n' go traffic. All this while in ECO mode or not. The way this tranny downshifts, you'd swear you were in a manual at times (that's what fiance says as well). I actually thought my GC shifted better BEFORE the reflash.

Today I plan on disconnecting the negative post of the battery again to see if this helps.

Re: Falling Out of Love with My 2014 Grand Cherokee

Seems most "complaints" I can find online about the transmission are V6 owners. The ZF transmission, besides the diesel, was one of the things that brought me over to the '14 GC. I test drove a V8 Summit about three weeks ago and was blown away. The thing shifted so effortlessly and smooth I could barely even tell it was shifting. Mightily impressed.

I, OTOH, love my Jeep more and more each day. It's the type of "do anything" vehicle I've missed having for the past 10 years.

The transmission in the V8 models (8HP70) is built by ZF for Chrysler. It's basically the same transmission used by many other manufacturers.

The transmission in the V6 models (845RFE) is built by Chrysler under license from ZF and is based on the lower torque rated 8HP45. From what I understand has been somewhat modified or "tweaked" from that original ZF design.

So they are in fact different transmissions on a couple of levels.

I do feel for all you that are having problems. I am a lucky v6 owner my transmission is the smoothest shifting trans I have ever owned. When I bought it back in July I truly felt that eco mode was dangerous, but after getting the two trans updates eco mode is working great just isn't much fun but is very smooth. I my mind you guys that are having problems have bad transmissions how can it be software when we all have the same software with very different results. I think at some point jeep will find the problem and have to fix it. Until then good luck guy's and hang in there. I want them to work this out because no one else builds a vehicle like this they made off-road luxury cool. I have 4000 miles on mind with 1500 of those towing 4500lbs and I hope for it to keep it up.

[QUOTE=rookiejeeper;904318]jacko15,
Do you work for Chrysler?? or are you sure you're not the service manager at my stealership?? They even had the nerve to tell me, "I tell my customers not to buy new model year vehicles, b/c they should wait until the bugs are worked out first." Glad to hear chrysler employees won't even stand by their products.
QUOTE]

My service manager that knew me before I ordered my 2014 Summit also said he wish I would have mentioned to him that I was going to get a 2014 as he would have suggested waiting at least 9 months for Chrylser to get most of the bugs out of a vastly updated model. He's been working at the dealer for 32 years so I guess he should know of what he speaks.

Any new model is going to have bugs. I don't think you need a service manager at a dealership to tell you that.
