FCW saved my ass thread

I feel this feature deserves more gratitude.

I've had it activate probably 20 times, generally for good reason, but in most cases I'm fairly confident I would have avoided a collision.

Last night I'm 99% sure it saved me from a wreck. I was in the far right lane moving about 35 mph, looking at the stereo as my wife was flipping through music on the HDD. A guy swerved over from the middle lane and slammed on brakes to turn in to a gas station. FCW brought my attention to it, and even after I slammed on brakes, I came about 2 feet from rear-ending him. I'm not sure who's fault it would have been, as it was an abrupt maneuver on his part, but thanks to FCW, I don't have to find out!

I'm starting to think the radar and other technology-based safety features should become mandatory on all cars in a few years.

Re: FCW saved my ass thread

That and the blind spot detection system (which works very accurately) allows for more distraction free lane changes which helps to keep your eyes forward in heavy traffic and detects if a vehicle sneaks into the blind spot at the last second. Collision warning has only alerted me twice, one of which was a nice helpful hint. The side collision warning when backing out of a parking space is also more helpful than I thought it would be...

Re: FCW saved my ass thread

I wanted these advanced electronics (collision warning, adaptive cruise, blind spot detection) even though I had to wait to place the order for my Jeep. I like gadgets, and these seemed really cool. And I too think they are incredibly useful safety features that have and will continue to reduce accidents. As much as I hate to admit, the damn smartphones are a bad distraction.

Re: FCW saved my ass thread

Actually just yesterday the rear cross path detectection saved some idiot pedestrian. I was backing out from a metered spot ( car in front front was really close) so I could pull out. I was going like 5 mph and only moved like 10 feet, but some moron crossed the street illegally ( not at a corner/crosswalk) and thought it would be a good idea to be like 2 inches from an SUV's back bumper.
Guess it was his lucky day.
