Owners of the WK2 SRT encounter this problem often. And their Jeep Dealerships have always been able to reapply this 2-sided tape & fix this issue. Do a search on the SRT form for more info.

Indeed. The body shop at my dealership has repaired a lot of these lifting trim pieces on Summits -- it's fairly common. They use a different tape and generally get it permanently fixed.

"today's adhesive tapes are wickedly powerful if the correct one is used in the correct application"

What they said. I also have a 1996 Jeep XJ and the side moldings were held on with 3M foam tape. They never came off until I tugged and pounded on them so I could re paint the black on the lower panels. They sell that tape a O'Reillys in the US as well as other places.

Ya.. year 4

Couple things I'm curious about.
-how many coins will get stuck in the CD player
-how bad will the chrome on the front look
-how low will that dual exhaust hang(they they never look straight )
-stitching on the steering wheel already unraveling(my 2012 Limited never did)
-oh ya ...those adaptive head lights sure are active( wonder what the lifespan on those are?.)
- oh ya ...talk about sensor porn(front ,back side, dash),wow

Truck has amazing initial at quality though.

It is clear that the adhesive held but the foam middle layer separated. Wrong tape for application, should have been a more dense foam core.
I agree there is some good strong quality stuff out there which isnt the light duty crap they used here. This stuff is not going to last i pulled a small piece out it has the same properties of something i might find at the dollar store. If the jeep was 7 or 8 years old ok things dont last for ever and you might expect a little of that. But even the oldest of the 2014s are little more than a year and a half old. To hear its fairly common to be falling off already is not very good. A small lifting corner may not sound like much until your in a car wash and it snags on a something and rips the whole thing off. Two of mine almost to that point so probably time for another service visit or they will blame the car wash and the car wash will blame lose siding on my 2014 and guess who be holding the bill.

Totally disagree bro. They use high quality 3m automotive tape. I've seen it on repair parts for the srt. Its the beat stuff 3m makes.

Scott i guess whatever the brand they are using doesnt matter as much as the fact that its a bad application of it. It could be the best tape in the world but if they are using it in a manor that we are seeing so many failures this early in the vehicles life then someone messed up back in design.

Re: Fender Trim (Summit) lifting

Its an easy fix if you wanna attempt it. Just heat up the area with a hairdryer and physically hold it down till it cools....clamp it down or tape it down with painters tape till it cools.

All the conspiracy theories are just that...theories....and conspiracy....LOL. IMHO the problem is the application process. Any kind of moisture will inhibit adhesion....ANY! They also use an adhesion promoter that is applied by a human....so there is room for mistakes. I doubt there are as many problems as a whole than what is shown here. Ive had TWO SRT's...a 2013 and now a 2014 and never had a single problem. Of course I don't use car washes etc either.

Re: Fender Trim (Summit) lifting

another thing Ill add....ITS A CHEAP FIX FOLKS! Even if out of warranty....the tape is like $5 for a 20 FOOT roll! A child could apply it! Just clean the old adhesive off, prep the area with alcohol, let dry, apply tape...press and hold,....then hit it with some heat or park in the sun. VERY EASY. Its not the end of the world.

Re: Fender Trim (Summit) lifting

One of mine is also lifting. I will just keep an eye on it and if it get's bad, I'll try the heat trick and/or remove the trim and re-apply some more tape. Not a big deal, but I could see this being a long term issue for dealerships.

Re: Fender Trim (Summit) lifting

I had the same issue and the dealer said a poorly formed part was to blame. They ordered a new one, painted it deep cherry in the body shop, reapplied with new tape and it's been fine. No issues with the other 3 so I don't think its a tape, humidity, etc issue.

Re: Fender Trim (Summit) lifting

I had all mine redone by dealer
They advised jeep warranty would replace

All they did was remove and add trim clear adhesive. Took all day but good job.

Could do it yourself but the tears are a bitch
