Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

I used cheep rims from TireRack all winter with Blizzaks. The original Jeep wheels where in storage all winter, with only one day of use on the stock wheels and Michelin tires. I took the wheels to Firestone to have them put Destination A/Ts on, and mount the stock Jeep wheels with those tires in place of the Blizzaks. I go to pick up the car, and there is mounting grease all over the rims (hiding the damage). I wipe the rims off before I leave, and notice that all 4 are scratched. There are scratches about an inch from the rim edge that go all the way around in a perfect line. In addition, each wheel has one of the 5 spokes that has more intense scratches at an angle. My brother thinks it was the machine that take the tires off/on that must have done that. The guy that was working there at the end of the day said the manage has gone home, as has the guy that did the install. I have to come back Friday morning and see what the manager will do. He said "he has never seen that kind of damage before, but if I say the scratches weren't there before...." I'm so mad I'm spitting nails. He said they might be able to send them out to be polished. Aren't the 18 inch rims on the Overland Clear coated or something? Can these be repaired? THEY WERE BRAND NEW AND PERFECT WHEN I DROPPED THEM OFF!!!!!

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

The same exact thing happened to me when I had my Michelin's installed at NTB. Same place, I think it was from the balancing machine, I was able to buff them out. There must be something to the rims that is hitting something on the balancing machine.

You almost have to spoon-feed these knuckleheads. My previous vehicle was a BMW 330ci. Ordered tires from tire rack and NTB was their preferred installer. I dropped off the car. When I picked it up the car looked weird. I thought it was the new tires. I then took a closer look. They mounted the rear tires on the front rims and the front tires on the rear rims (different sizes). And then I noticed that they had put tap on weights on the outside wheel lips which scratched my wheels. Also in a previous vehicle they used an impact gun on my wheel locks and stripped them. What a surprise when I tried to take the wheels off for winter....

I now call and ask if they service chromed or premium wheels before I even drive out there. I also make it a point to speak with the mechanic that is installing my wheels to make sure he puts on sticky weights. I know it sounds like overkill but I just don't want a repeat.

RD, don't let firestone off the hook until you are completely satisfied.

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

Oh man that sucks. Once went to pick my truck up from the local tire place, got in backed up and ran over two of my center pieces they left off! then the guy tries to bend it back and put it back on. they bought me new ones. I have so many tire store horror stories. I watch those guys like a hawk now and speak up when there about to do something stupid.

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

You always need to check if a tire shop has the proper equipment to handle rims without lips. They should be able to buff those out of the clear coat. Mine had scuffs on it when I bought mine and they were able to buff it out no problem.

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

I forgot another part of the story. The lug nuts on the winter wheels are different than those for the stock wheels. When I picked the car up, they hand me one of the stock wheel lug nuts and said it won't go on. The thread was damaged. "The tech noticed right away and didn't force it." They put one of the winter wheel lug nuts on in its place. He tried to tell me that it much have been damaged when it was removed 4 months ago. HOW DO YOU STRIP A THREAD REMOVING A NUT?!? You can certainly cross thread it putting it on, but NOT TAKING IF OFF! These guys are beyond bad....

Aww, That's horrible. I was going to do the same thing except get black 18" Mopar wheels. Never thought you could screw up something as simple as changing tires and rims.
Thanks for the heads up. I hope you get this worked out to your satisfaction.

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

THIS is why I ONLY use a store that I have a history with. Locally Discount Tire is the go to place for performance wheels and tires and I've developed a relationship with the manager and some of the mechanics so they treat me right.

The damage done here is probably from the balancer. Most shops don't use the finger clamps that use the lug nut holes to hold the rim on, they use the plastic "cup" attached to the end of the big wing nut. My local Discount switched over to the finger holders a few years back on one balancer specifically for expensive wheels. They have since replaced all their balance machines and use this clamp exclusively, even on steel wheels.

VS.

Re: Firestone scratched all 4 wheels!!!!

Sorry if anyone on here installs tires for a living but I have always watched these guys like a hawk, except for this last time and I regret it. They don't care, it's not their car so whatever. The manager was telling me it wasn't his fault before I could even discuss it.
