Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

I did not mean to imply that tread pattern is irrevelant. I think a lot of people will look at the aggresive tread on an all-terrain tire, and think that because it is good in mud, it will be good in snow and ice, which is not necessarily the case. I have never gone past a check point with all-terrain tires during the snow-tire/chain requirement, but I'm pretty sure they will make you turn back with your Destinations A/T equivalent if they don't have the snowflake on the side, or chains to put over them.

Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

Went to NTB and bought a set of Micheiln LTX M/S 2's. Next generation of best tire I ever owned, had them on my 96 and 98 Grands. Great all around tire, on rails on corners, quiet, great in the snow. Went and found a parking lot with deep snow, stopped took off and locked it hard over right and she whipped right around. That's the truck I know.

Latitude's will go on Ebay, nice tire as long as they don't get into the snow. Or unless you don't feel turning is necessary.

I completely agree. I think too many SUV owners operate under the flawed belief that just 4WD and A/T tires will offer superior winter performance, when in fact cars with winter tires achieve better overall performance in ice and snow.

On my ZJ I had Firestone Destinations A/Ts, on my WJ with QD I had Michelin Cross Terrains, and on my current car I run Michelin X-Ice Xi2 tires in the winter. There is no doubt that my car with the X-Ice Xi2 tires handles the snow and ice better than either of my previous Jeeps that had good A/T tires with very good ratings in snow and ice.

Now, if you take an SUV like the WK2 and combine a superb 4WD/AWD system with winter tires and considerable ground clearance, that combination is hard to beat.

Don't know how accurate consumer reports is on tires, but when you look at their list of all-terrain truck tires, like the Dueler A/T Revo, the vast majority are rated "fair" or "poor" on ice, and I'm sure their tread designs are pretty aggressive....

Great choice. That tire probably is the best performer in snow and ice of all the non-winter tires

As much as people like to criticize CR, I think their tire reviews are usually very informative and accurate and they usually align very well with the Tirerack.com survey results.

Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

The LTX M/S is the only all season truck tire to get a very good rating on ice from CR. Good choice!

Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

Had mine on 3" of fresh snow over logging roads with wash outs, water bars, etc, today. No issues with the Blizzak's. The GC was extremely sure footed.

Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

Pictures don't really do them justice, they look pretty much like the Latitudes from the sidewall with the raised writing. But the tread is way better, major traction now.

Re: First Experience with new truck in snow

Nice "snow" review WJS. Did you have a lot of kicking from the ABS - I thing this is the way they control the traction on the front axel, wheel to wheel. When you turned the traction control OFF did you get more kicking from the ABS? How does QDII actually works when you turn traction OFF -are you getting only RWD because front axel does not have LSD and works with the traction control and ABS.
Could anyone please explain it to me.
