First Experience with new truck in snow

This was the first time I had driven the new truck through snow.

Some basic observations:

QD2 is great
Michelin Latitude tires SMA!!!
Traction control will take some getting used to.

Snow wasn't deep, probably 1-2 inches but wet and slippery.

These Michelin Latitude tires are terrible! I have been running Michelin LTX M/S 30" on my 98 Limited 5.9 and they were great.

When making relatively slow turns onto another street they basically didn't want to bite in to turn. No traction at all and it spooked me, then when I tried to goose the ass end around a little as I would with my 98 the traction control would kick in. So Im not turning and I can't kick the butt around like I normally would. Turned off the traction control and still had the same issue with turning but at least I could swing it's butt a little.

Terrible for snow, great for normal driving. I had concerns about these tires when I bought it but shrugged it off. I do worry overall about the tires though I think they are too wide. They wanted to push the slush and I think others will notice this as well. I had a difficult time changing lanes, it would hit the slush and just keep going straight, tried to goose it over but no go. These tires are going to get replaced.

QD2 was great, I stopped on a steep hill by my house with deeper snow and is typically slippery and no problem at all. Due to the heavy snow on the road I used "Snow" on the terrain selection....I don't know to be honest if it did something I can't be sure what it was? Seems to me that basically the terrain select is basically a replacement for the big transfer case handle some of us are accustom to. At the end of the day you are either in 4 Hi or 4Low, I suppose that might start a debate but I honestly couldn't tell what if anything it was doing?

Overall I thought it handled very well. Coming from a 98 that was very well set up for snow I'm pleased so far (Other then the POS tires)

For me the traction control will take some getting used to, I turned it off 1/2 way to work. Now I would guess maybe it would be interesting to see how people respond as the winter goes by. My guess is that there may be 2 categories; those who have used 4x4 for years and could be "old School" and those who only know AWD or some European version of that. Having used Jeep systems for years I guess it will take some getting used to, more fun to me to control what going on without the computer, I guess that's is the old school in me?

Great Truck I love it! My wife is driving this morning about 50 miles into the really heavy snow so I'll wait to hear from her and see what she says. She is driving the Limited with Quadra Trac 2 and 20" tires so that may be interesting. Although those tires had a decent block pattern in the tread so maybe it will be better. I'll post when I hear back from her.

I'm going to check into new tires now...

When I purchase my Overland the tires will be replaced within the first 100 miles. Looking at the Hankook Dynapro a/t rf 10's. See a lot of good reviews for them and the price isn't too bad either.

All terrain tires don't make great snow tires. It's NOT about the tread pattern! It's about rubber compounds designed to be soft and grippy at low temperatures so they grip the ice. A tire that is good in snow will have the mountain/snowflake symbol on the side. If you don't have that symbol on your tires here in Utah when the "snow tires or chains required" warning is turned on for the canyons, and you get into an accident, you better have one hell of a lawyer....

On the "snow" setting -- traction control is designed to keep wheels from slipping. But in the snow you want some of this "paddling" action. In "snow" mode, traction control allows more wheel sleep so your tires paddle, but not so much that a wheel can melt itself a frictionless hole and just freewheel.

It might have been a better setting for trying to take your turns and go through slush. At least it's designed to be.

IMO the best pure snow tire is the Blizzack DM-V1. They also come in 20's. No real AT or trail use though, but as Rcantaldo suggests, their softer compound and other jou jou makes them best for snow and ice.

Otherwise, +1 to 1S1K's suggestion for the Dynapro A/T RF10s, or another similar AT with snow/mud rating. They also do well on dry pavement and on trail use. I am using the Firestone Destination AT and love them. See Tirerack and Discount Tire ratings for guides (survey links below).

Not all tires that are good in snow have the snowflake on a mountain symbol. There are plenty of tires that do very well in snow without having that symbol on the sidewall. In fact, I've seen snow and ice comparison tests where some tires without the snowflake/mountain symbol have outperformed tires with the symbol. I wouldn't base my decision solely on whether or not a particular tire has that symbol or not...

I put the Goodyear Forteras in some snow and I didn't think they were too bad. They aren't a snow tire of course, but I felt pretty sure footed with them.

So the question is... What did you do with the POS rubber? I have the ORII package as well, and I want to replace the 18" tires with a good all year tire which will work well in snow. Will anyone buy these or give a credit with a new purchase?
And what's the noise level like on the road with the Dynapro or Firestones?

I run Pirelli Scorpian Snow and Ice on my Acura RDX for the winter and they have been great. They handle both deep snow and ice equally well.

I had Nokian Hakkapeliitta on my 02 GC Limited and was very happy with them.
I will most likly put them on my 11 GC Overland when I get it.

I am still waiting for the new 720 to open for ordering.
It gives me time to decide if I want ot order it with the off road package or not.
I am leaning towards getting the OR package and then mounting the 18" rims with winter tires and buying new rims and tires for summer use.

Winters in Minnesota can be long.

I'm probably going to put them in the basement, they have less then 2K on them. The tire store wont give me nearly what they are worth. Maybe I'll sell them?

Winter traction comes down to three things: tread depth, tread pattern, and tire compound. All three play an important role in determining the ability of a tire to handle snow and ice. Comments below stating that tread pattern does not matter and rather only tire compound matters are just not true. A soft compound winter tire that had only large blocks of tread with no siping or pattern at all would not work very well in snow and ice. You have to have both a soft tire compound and siping/a tread pattern designed for snow and ice to make an effective winter tire.

Depending on how much you expect to encounter snow and ice, winter tires may be the best way to go. As moosehead said, the Blizzak DM-V1 is probably the best overall winter tire, with the SUV/light truck version of the popular passenger winter tire Michelin X-Ice Xi2--the Latitude X-Ice, being a good choice as well. When I get my WK2, I plan to run the 20" wheels in the summer, and mount some Blizzak DM-V1s on the black 18" Jeep wheels.

For those looking for more of an A/T tire that still performs well in snow, the Firestone Destination A/T, Michelin LTX A/T 2, and Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 are some good choices that are all available in 265/60-18.
