First Jeep Buying experience

Hey guys - About to close on a 2015 JGC Altitude this weekend. Being that this is my first time buying a Jeep (or any american car for that reason), I am weary to purchase without an extended warranty. The irony of the Jeep in my eyes is that theyve been rated a lot in the past as very unreliable cars, but for some reason all my friends drove their Jeeps >150k miles into the ground without numerous repairs.

Everything I have read thus far has been good reviews on the newer JGC's, but I am wondering how many of you bit the bullet on the extended warranty or if you took the gamble? I know that Maxcare package seems kinda affordable, and it seems popular on this forum. What do you guys recommend?

Re: First Jeep Buying experience

The Mopar MaxCare Extended Service Contract (it's not an "extended warranty" is very useful and comprehensive, especially for JGC trim levels that include a lot of tech and expensive technologies. For the Altitude, you have a lot less of that stuff so it's more of a question about how long you intend to keep the vehicle in service and how much will you appreciate the piece of mind of essentially "prepaying for future service". For my Summit, it was a no-brainer and I bought the MaxCare lifetime contract with $100 deductible.

That said, keep in mind that there is a very competitive market for the MaxCare contracts so be sure you keep that in mind as you consider the cost. Many dealers will try and sell these contracts for $1000 or more than you can buy them for from an online Mopar/Chrysler dealer...pure profit and right out of your pocket. I bought mine online from Ziegler.

You also don't need to buy the contract up-front. You can purchase it at no additional cost (outside of maybe a price increase) anytime within the first 12 months or 12K miles and for a slight increase in cost from 12-48 months.

First Jeep Buying experience

Great choice of vehicle! 😀

Upon my purchase I decided to forgo the warranty. You don't need to buy it right away which was why I decided to wait. My main concern was the 8-speed trans and all the issues I read and heard for the V6. I pulled the trigger for the warranty around 10K miles. Not because I had any issues, knock on wood, but because I enjoyed the Jeep very much and would be keeping her for a long time.

I purchased the Lifetime MaxCare Warranty with $100 deductible from Ziegler. Remember you have some time to purchase the warranty but do it before the 12K mark. Past that I believe there is a slight increase in cost.

Re: First Jeep Buying experience

First off it is not a warranty

With that out the way you can purchase it at any point before the 3/36 is up for the same price.

Re: First Jeep Buying experience

Okay thanks for the info guys. I got rid of my Sonata after 3 years, so I am not sure how long I will have this car. Since I am upgrading to a bigger car for an expanding family, my gut tells me I will have this car for a long time.

I guess I will weigh it out for the first few months and see how I like it. Good to know I can wait it out a little. Also, is it essentially an extension of the manufacturer warranty or does it cover more? If it is, it is probably best to stay with the manufacturer warranty until you realize whether or not youre having issues with the car.

Only partially true. Pretty much every quarter lately there has been a price increase in MaxCare having nothing to do with mileage or length of ownership. My advice is to buy it as soon as you know you are going to want it. Even before the 3/36 warranty runs out there are benefits you can start to use. My recommendation is to call Bob Cline at Zeigler's and get his advice. I have found Bob to be a straight shooter. Also, you might want to consider the Mopar Tire and Wheel service contract. Replacing one wheel or tire out of pocket would more than pay for it. You can get that from Zeigler's too.

Service contract vs. extended warranty..

What's the difference?

Re: First Jeep Buying experience

The difference is legal/commercial...it's been discussed a number of times. A warranty is something that's included in the purchase and states that defects, etc., will be attended to for a specific duration of time and/or miles of use. For vehicles, warranties usually include both materials and labor and do not have a deductible.

The extended service contract is outside of the manufacturer's warranty. You can also liken it to an "insurance policy" for mechanical and other systems. During the warranty period, the service contract (in the case of the Mopar plans) compliments the warranty as the rental/loaner program that may be part of the plan is available for warranty service. Once the warranty expires, the extended service contract provides coverage for things included in the contract (almost everything for MaxCare) for the life of the contract with only a deductible. The covers things "out of warranty", in other words. The service contract is separate from the warranty, both in its coverage and in how you buy it.

Many folks interchange the term "warranty" for service contract, but that doesn't change the nature of the transaction. They are different animals.

Keep in mind depending on the plan and what state you are in the warranty may be transferable. Which can add value when selling.

Also if you decided to trade early you can get a credit back.

Explain it to me like I am 5.....So all legality aside the only difference between "service contract" and "warranty" is that it has a deductible attached to it and some parts are excluded?

Re: First Jeep Buying experience

Call it what you want. The bottom line is that your car will be fixed after the initial warranty expires. The only cost being the deductible, if any.

Warranty you get with the vehicle purchase at no extra charge and with no deductible. Service Contract you pay extra for and covers beyond the warranty with a deductible per incident, although zero $ deductible is available for extra cost.
