First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

I'm just getting a chance to look at the pics of the new 2014 model released today. I currently own a '12 Laredo X 3.6 2WD in Max Steel w/ the 20" Wheel and Nav package. Thought I would share my (random) thoughts about the changes between the '12 and '14 model years...

Likes:
  • Diesel engine option
  • 8 speed tranny (especially with the addition of paddle shifters!)
  • New 8" touchscreen monitor & dash displays
  • New Granite color choice

Dislikes:
  • Front End/Rear End - I prefer the large chrome surround on my '12 to the new body color grilles. Not really a fan of the LED headlights for the upper models, nor of the new treatment of the front lower fascia. Regarding the LEDs, I read somewhere on here that Jeep sought a "unified" LED look vs. individual bulbs. They could have done something w/ individual bulbs to synch with the iconic 7-slot grille
  • Chrome - way too much on the Summit, and I don't like the chrome trim around the bottom of the vehicle. See above...I like SOME chrome...like on the '12 grille surround & tailgate trim. However, I specifically chose a Laredo because I did not like the chrome door handles, mirrors, etc.
  • Steering Wheel - too busy now....I like the relatively few buttons on the '12 wheel, the new one has too much going on (which is why I hate most Ford steering wheels). I also like the shape of the old steering wheel....new one looks like it belongs on an Acura

Regardless, it is a Grand Cherokee and everyone has their own tastes and opinions. I'm just glad that it's selling so well....the people of my hometown need the work and have proven that they can produce a reliable world class product. Now I'm wondering if they are working on another cool ad for the Super Bowl....

Re: First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

Am seeing interesting numbers. For the diesel to be rated at 240hp/420lb-ft means the hp peak is close to 3,000 rpm and torque is dropping (really want to see the curves). This means it really needs the 8 speed but can pull top gear at 1200 rpm NP. Suspect this is how they get 30 mpg (maybe even a 3.09 gear with 2WD). They played this sort of game with the Ram HFE model.

Must admit I do not see where you would insert a CD/DVD into the 8.4" multifunction center.

Just going to have to wait and see what is included and optional on what cars and at what price.

BTW steering wheel is busy because they had to move the three buttons on the back on each side to the front to clear the flappy paddles (why ? Is passe' in Europe and silly on a GC).

Do think the Laredo is the best looking.

Likes:
  • Diesel engine option
  • 8 speed tranny
  • New 8.4" display
  • Interior refinements
  • Rear seat USB

Dislikes:
  • Lack of Saddle interior color. I finally talked my wife into getting it and they take it away with the refresh.
  • Lack of DVD at launch. We have our tablets, but I wanted to have the integrated system and after seeing one of the pictures, it doesn't look like it can easily be added.
  • Diesel late delivery. We've been down a car for nearly a year and I doubt I can make my wife wait any longer. I still need to test one before I would commit, but I like the power of the Hemi and decided to go that route.

Re: First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

For some context, I'm looking at the Laredo:

Likes: 8-speed transmission (it's what I waited for), LED taillamps, 7" TFT EVIC, standard 5" radio w/ backup camera option on Laredo (only available on more expensive X before), included compact spare tire (required ORAI package before), and any other unannounced refinements and improvements that were probably made.

Not-sures: Price (yet to be announced) and the new grille. I actually think the new grille looks killer on the Max Steel Limited in the photos and video, but I don't like it at all on the red Summit in the photos and video. Jury is out as to what I'll think of it when I see it in person on the Laredo. Based on how it looks in the photos and video though, if I were to get a 2013 I'd probably get the Deep Cherry Red, but if I were to get a 2014 I'd probably get the True Blue.

Dislikes: The fact that they changed the grille so much. Like it or dislike it I just don't think it was necessary, and if they didn't change it there'd be no question whatsoever that I'd go for the 2014 (which I still think I will, unless the price is too high).

Re: First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

From the few videos I have seen of the 14 WK2, even though it has LED taillamps, looks like the brake and stop lamps are incandescent. I hope I am wrong but if not, that is just plain being cheap. The front turn signals are LED.

That would be pretty lame, and would surprise me... what videos are you referring to?

Re: First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

Nevermind, I see what you're talking about. The turn signals do indeed look like incandescent at the very end of this video. I don't mind the signals not being LED as I think sometimes they don't look as pleasing to the eye:

You can see the brake lights at the very end of this video, but it' harder to tell if they're LED or not. They appear to light up as rapidly as the LED bar on the top, or is it just my imagination?

They are absolutely incandescent for both turn and brake lights. What a joke... Why have LED running lights and bulbs for the lights that matter? The 2013's are looking better and better every day.

I agree. It's ridiculous that the front has LED turn signals, but not the rear. Just another bean counter move that I bet Sergio doesn't know about yet.

Even my old 2012 looks like it has a better chance of remaining with me.

Re: First Look: 2014 WK2 Likes/Dislikes

The CD deck is supposedly an option! It will probably take up what little space is left in what was a storage bin in the center stack of the dashboard.
And another thing- the flipper glass is one of the features which caused me to consider the WK2. Now it is flipperless. Why? Too many problems? I haven't had any issues.
