I agree. I was hesitant to put holes in my bumper, but here in MD it is required and you will get pulled over (it's happened to me a few times with other cars).
So I reluctantly drilled holes in the dimples on the bumper. Then, I ran the screw through the frame and the license plate. I then added a rubber washer around each screw. I also added numerous 3M, self stick rubber pads to the back of the license plate. I made sure the bumper was free of debris and I put the plate on.
I did this for the rear as well. I've also done it on other cars I've owned (front & rear) and have never had an issue (di this on my wifes 2010 R350 as well).
I/we go through car washes mainly in the winter, MD goes nuts with the salt, but I make sure I use touchless and I get the basic wash - just enough to get the heavy crap off. I read somewhere that the paint needs like 6-months to properly cure so you should only hand wash during that period, whether that is true or not I don't know. But my point is that I've never lost one of the self stick rubber pads.
