First Offroad Experience in the WK2

My wife and I are in central Kentucky touring the Kentucky Bourbon Trail this weekend (my belated birthday gift, we waited for nice summer weather). We just picked up our WK2 last weekend, and this is our first extended road trip. On our way from Four Roses to Woodford Reserve, we decided to take some back roads and encountered the scene below. Apparently, this isn't an anomaly, this is just what this road looks like. We stopped at the bottom of the hill and my wife asked, "what do we do now?" I said, "we floor it," and I mashed the pedal. The HEMI kicked in and we sprayed water a couple feet above the roof. The stream wasn't more than 6-8" deep, but it was still pretty sweet The roads down here are pretty crazy. I would have loved to tear up the pavement in my old wrx, but the torque I have now was greatly appreciated.

Re: First Offroad Experience in the WK2

Sounds like you had a great time doing some offroading!

But!.... I'd be careful going too fast when crossing even 6-8" of water. While the commercials show the Grand Cherokee with water coming up and over the vehicle, the risk is a hydrolocked engine.

http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php...ight=hydrolock
(there's some varying opinions on the thread linked above, read through it and make up your own mind)

Check out this youtube video of a new Wrangler stalling after going through 10" of water.

Re: First Offroad Experience in the WK2

+1 Waterfording can be fun, but not worth risking major engine damage. Take it slow and Jeep says the WK2 can handle 20 inch depth. But a bad splash into the intake could ruin your whole trip.

Eh, only had to do it once. I guess if the crap cars around here do this daily, I can run through it one time. It wasn't like I was fording the Ohio River. I've done worse with my Subaru.

It's not going through it, but the speed you want to watch. Keep the water spray as minimal as possible.

Sounds like a fun trip!

Re: First Offroad Experience in the WK2

That thread with the OBX trip and hydrolock seems BS to me. I think there is a ton of info still missing IMO. Hydrolock will kill it right now, not 300 miles down the road.

That Wrangler must have had some other issues, I have had my Nissan Altima through deeper water than that at higher speed and nothing happened.

We had a freak rain storm pop up yesterday which dropped a lot of water pretty quickly. Me and the kids took the Jeep out to go look for puddles. I had water over the hood of the Jeep (when it was splashing, not completely under water )with no issues at all. I looked at the filer when I got home and nothing was even remotely wet. I had to keep the wipers on high just to get out of the other side. It was a pretty long puddle, probably 30 feet long and 8"-10" deep and I hit it at close to 20 mph to make a nice big splash for the kids.

Re: First Offroad Experience in the WK2

Like I said, If my WRX could make it through crazy flooded roads (and trust me, it has), I would expect the GC to be just fine. And it was. The WRX isn't even "trail rated" (though with a few more inches of ground clearance, it should be).

So, today I mentioned to my wife that we should take a trip to the Indiana Dunes and see what the Jeep can do up there. Her reply, "We DO have a sand mode!" Man, I love her

ya, it was cool. i took a trail from the Valley of Fire to Lake Mead (Bitter Springs trail) near Las Vegas. It had sand, gravel, and some large rocks. There were some washouts that were challenging. I did hit bottom at least once but no leaks so far The stock tires did alright. I'm probably going to want some skid plates and real tires tho. However, it was sweet to roll through the 100 degree desert in my air-conditioned 3.6 Laredo X 4x4.

i want to hear how others are doing off road. particularly how the guys that put 275/60/18 tires on did. rub or no rub?
