You're due at 10K miles, 1 year or when the dashboard tells you to do it...whichever comes first, assuming you are doing "normal" driving. (not a taxi service, not heavy off-road, heavy towing, etc.) Nothing to be nervous about. And it's right in your manual.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I usually do mine earlier, say around 6K??? Well, cuz I get tire rotations with it and of course they fill up the windshield washer fluid too all for one low price.

At any point in time in your 9 weeks of ownership did you bother taking a gander at the owner's manual???

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

Why get all that anxious ? Keep it simple, reasonable. I change mine with synthetic based on whichever condition is more protective: every 5000 miles or when oil life shows 25% or less.

Typically I show about 30-35% life left by the time I clock 5000 miles. My first oil change was at 1000 miles, the second at 3000, the third at 5000 and then I started the 5000 mile cycle. My Subaru gets synthetic every 3000 miles on the dot, if not I swear the engine doesn't sound normal.

So basically what you're saying is you did 2 oil changes to the Jeep that were unnecessary When I had my 2014 Summit and my wife's 2015 Honda Odyssey I brought both of those in slightly early. Not anywhere near as early as you, but probably when the computer said 30% life remaining. Both dealers looked at me like I was crazy. They are like uhhhh, your at 30% oil life left. I don't know if there is any truth behind it, but both dealers I did this at Jeep, and Honda said there is a special oil in from the factory that would be beneficial to leave in for the complete first cycle. I'm done doing early oil changes, its pointless, waste of resources and money. My 2015 High Altitude has 1300 miles on it and will not see a dealer until it says its due and I have free oil changes for life so its not a money issue lol. People are so stuck on old habits and how things used to be decades ago with cars and they just cannot break their habit.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I've been running my MY12 Hemi with 8000 mile intervals right on the dot per the manual and I use synthetic. No way am I going to waste oil by changing it sooner unless my driving patterns change to where they meet the manufacturer's requirements for more frequent maintenance windows. (unlikely) "Back in the day" engines and oil were different animals and there was benefit to more frequent changes. I don't believe that's true anymore.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I've been running MY13 V6 with 10,000 mile intervals. Big difference is the oil you use. Before I could get synthetic Pennzoil 5w-20 I used Valvoline synthetic. It would only make it to about 7000 miles before the computer would tell me to change the oil. Even when I change my oil at 10,000 it still doesn't look as dirty as it should.

This. I might switch my '16 Hemi over to synthetic at it's first oil change, but I'm certainly not taking it in at 1000 miles. I'm definitely not taking it in anywhere before 10 or 20%. I get it serviced at the dealer, and while it's convenient to work and they give me a rental, it's time and effort I gotta spend either dropping it off on my way in or going back and dropping it, then going back to get it. I usually try to time oil changes when it has to go in for other things. I don't go to quick lube places and I'm done doing it myself - only thing I change myself now is my motorcycle.

No. What I am saying is that whatever engine running time cars have from the factory (test track and/or dyno time) will not be sufficient to wear out all the debris, impurities and imperfections from the manufacturing process. By 1000 miles I was already at 60% oil life left. Yes, I got dirty looks from the dealer but I don't care. I was paying for it and for the longevity of my engine. I am not going to keep the car forever. But for the time I keep it, it is one less item to worry about.

With my Subaru, I learned over time that I was right. And time will tell, but I cannot be wrong about the frequency of oil changes - wasteful yes, but wrong no. Subaru at the end of 2000s found itself mired in controversies: oil lines supplying oil to the turbo had a filter ("pill") that restricted lubrication. Hence most owners started removing these filters. But some did not change the frequency of oil changes. Well...oil got dirty enough to cause failures. That was for a car that required oil changes at 5000 miles and for years one could not find aftermarket filters for the oil. They had to be bought from Subaru. After the 2008 disaster, Subaru revised down the oil change intervals to 3000 miles. Do you know who slept easy through 2007 -2009 ? Me - the guy who kept his filters in, and changed oil at 3000 miles since the beginning. I eventually changed the turbo and the oil lines in 2010 and the filters (in the original lines) were clean.

Am I wasteful ? Yeah. Unnecessary ? Most likely. Peace of mind. Every time.
