First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

With my '12 jku, when I hit 3k miles, I started asking the dealer about oil changes. They said, "It'll tell you when."

At 5k miles I asked again....I grew up with changing oil and filter every 3k miles or 3 months...period. Dealer said, "it's not asking for it yet. Don't worry." Of course, in my mind, i was wondering when we started letting the machines do that much thinking for us. Then I decided I was thinking all f'd-up and I should just let it go and find something else to worry about.

At 7k miles, my 2012 JKU asked for a change and I was relieved to set it up with a synthetic oil program at the dealer...whew....all good.

But now I'm not in my JKU anymore, and I've got 9300 miles on my amazing 9-week old 2015 summit hemi....and I'm getting nervous again.

At what mileage are most of y'all being asked (by your Jeep) to give it an oil change?

I would always rather go early than late...but I'm willing to let the technology do its job (hopefully).

Thx all

V

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I'd just change it for peace of mind sake I change mine every 6 months regardless of miles with full synthetic

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I have my 2015 overland for 10 months now. Have 5100 miles. im also used to getting oil changes every 3 months. I just took it to my buddy to get the oil change. The gauge said 21% oil life. I didnt feel like waiting for the car to tell me its time for the change.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I take mine in when it tells me to. My '12 was about every 7-8000 miles, my '14 is usually about every 8,000. I had it ding at me around 4500 once, got it changed. This last time it didn't ding at me until about 9300 or so. I have no problem letting it go that long, I usually get the oil changed every 6-8 months with the amount of miles I drive every day.

Gone are the days of 3,000 mile oil changes in cars. My bike, maybe. But that has a redline of 15,000+ RPM's and I'm usually running around 7-8K on the tach on daily rides. I usually change the oil in that twice a year, around 3 or 4000 miles using full synthetic. My wifes Camry dings at 5000 miles and I think it's nuts.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

Patience! The monitor does know best! 10K (and even 15K) oil changes are common now, however, most are with synthetic. For peace of mind I would change it at 20%. I only drive mine in the winter with only about 5,000 miles, so mine gets changed at the mandatory 1 year interval.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

change it when you want to. There's a BMW 750 in my family and BMW's computer claims oil changes are only necessary every 12-15k....10 years and 100k later there's a new $5k repair bill every few months. They know exactly what they're doing with these extended oil change intervals and it isn't in our best interest, it's in theirs.

There are people that still change oil at 3 month intervals?!?!? Dude, this isn't 1965 anymore lol.

To the OP, yeah you kind of answered your own question....try to worry about something else. It shows you clear as day on your gauge cluster screen what percentage of oil life is remaining. If you want to do it at 10 or 20% fine, but it will tell you when its due and its absolutely nothing to worry about.

Re: First oil change...Gett'n nervous...

I have changed the oil a few time, each time when I reset the oil life monitor it indicates about 10K change interval based on the wifes 70/30 highway/local driving.

If you scavenge cheap oil, there is no reason to not change it more frequently.
I scored over a 100 qts of various flavors of synthetic at Advance Autos Dec clearance at 2$ per qt, got some PP,PU,Castrol Edge, in various viscositys and even some of the SRT 0w-40 which I guess most people are pay over 8$ a qt.

I think that's more because it has "BMW" on the side of the car. My parents had an X5 and it had 12K intervals. The big maintenance bills weren't oil related, it was everything else in the car that broke. They got rid of it, bought a Subaru, then got a '15 GC.

Could be, but to me doing an oil change at 3-5k vs 8-10k is cheap insurance. I tend to keep my vehicles well past 100k and I've had great luck with it. Then again it could be because until now I haven't been tempted to go German

I also got nervous at the thought of waiting until my HA told me to take it in. Although the dealer advise to wait until whenever, I buckled under the pressure and had it done at 5000 miles with 45% showing on the display. I don't know what I'll do for the second oil service.
