Re: Flat Towing Problem Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014

Bumping this thread and adding a question.

How do you unlock the steering wheel with a push button ignition switch if you are supposed to tow the car with the ignition turned Off?

Re: Flat Towing Problem Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014

I am bumping this up to see if there is anyone else who has installed a brake light system on a 2015 GC to flat tow.

My dealer says diodes on the tail lights will create an issue for the computer that monitors burned out bulbs.

He also said there was not enough space in the tail light assembly to install the Blue Ox bulb sockets. I called Blue Ox and they told me they have installed the sockets in a 2015 GC Overland with no issues.

Another option I ran across was a neighbor has a 2014 GC and he found some tail lights to replace the rear reflectors on the back bumper. They have bulbs that are brake/Turn and Running lights. This would seem to be a safer install. My only concern is that these are smaller and lower on the car which might be an issue with being visible for turn signals and running lights. My Aux. braking system pulls the brake pedal on the car so the car brake lights will always come on when the brakes are applied.

Installed this set on my brothers 2015 EcoDiesel to tow behind my parents RV. Works great.

2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tow Bar Wiring - TrailerMate

It's plug and play. No splicing wires or vehicle modifications.

Re: Flat Towing Problem Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014

I have the blue ox sockets installed in my 14 overland. No problems whatsoever. I have done many several day tows without disconnecting, and I have towed this vehicle for almost 30K miles. Best toad setup I have owned. Biggest item to remember is set normal ride height, and disable entry/exit feature.

Did you install them yourself? If so, did you have any issues drilling i to the tail light assembly?
Thanks

Re: Flat Towing Problem Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014

There are several scenarios where the CAN bus won't go to sleep and can cause battery drain. Backfeeds ofn the 4 down taillight harness is a possibility. A door ajar, etc...

How is the braking system powered? My BrakeBuddy uses a 12v socket to run the compressor, but I feed it from the Motorhome not the Jeep.

Re: Flat Towing Problem Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014

Thanks for the replies. I did manage to drill my tail light assemblies and install the LED version of the BluOx lights (they are smaller in diameter so smaller hole) and all is well so far.

My biggest issue was having to fabricate two metal brackets to install the break-away switch to the bumper and also the Air Force One air valve to the bumper. I ended up attaching the motorhome umbilical to the grill.

On a different note....FMCA had an article in the most recent magazine on a known issue towing the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee where the car steering may not track properly on rough roads due to an issue with the electronic steering system. The fix is a kit you can buy from Fiat-Chrysler that includes a power wire that attaches the motorhome battery system to the battery of the car and a switch to turn it on and off. The issue seems to be the car ignition must be on to activate the electronic steering computer to keep the front wheels from getting stuck and not turning freely from side to side.

I talked with Jeep Customer Care yesterday and they said the kit will not be available until the end of Feb and will be available only at dealers. They said we would have to buy the kit and the dealer would have to charge to install it. Not what I wanted to hear on a car advertised to be flat towable by FC since it is clearly indicated in the Manual how ot tow it flat.

Jeep Care also said there will be a revision to the Manual to indicate the "new" procedure to tow it flat.

Can you give us any more info on this part to buy from FCA? My parents tow their Grand Cherokee and they have not had a problem yet, but better to be prepared then wait for it to happen.

No other info yet. Jeep said there was no specific part number in the system yet...the tech just called it an anti wobble kit.

So far as has been reported, this part is only for the Cherokee vehicle line, not the Grand Cherokee vehicle line!

I asked Jeep Customer service if it was only the Cherokee and he said No, it was also the Grand too. I had him verify this while on the phone and he said both of them are affected.
