Lightbulb FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

As a new owner of a 2014 JGC w/ 3.6L engine that allows for flex fuel. I was wondering has any one tried using the 85 octane( flex fuel) and adding an octane booster to it to gauge the performance since the lower octane gives less MPG. Wondering if I could cheat MPG with a $6 cherry on top

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

I don't have the 3.6 but for all purposes; at least in my neck of the woods. The E-85 is not that much cheaper than regular 89 octane. The additional cost of he octane booster would then defeat the savings of filling up with E-85. IMO of course!

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

E-85 is 85% ethanol. The octane is much higher usually around 103. I would not use any booster.

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

85 octane and E85 is different things. 87 octane is the regular fuel. E85is 85% ethanol. When you put E85 your mpg will be worse when I calculate putting E85 does not make economic sense.

Yeah, but your mileage will be reduced by up to 35% when using 85% ethanol/15% gasoline.

IMHO, The only reason to use the E-85 would be to (supposedly) help the environment.

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

i only use it when I'm low on cash or just need a quick run. But yes I know the E85 gives less MPG but I was hoping I could cheat the system and get more out of less

Waste of time and energy. Just try and find a cheaper gas station. Not a great idea to keep switching between Ethanol and Standard RM2 gasoline IMO

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

You cannot cheat the system because E85 is not giving less mpg because of the less octane as you think. It is higher octane than regular gas but it has less energy in it.

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

2012Summit is right. Ethanol is around 113- 120 "octane", and E85 around 110-113. I put "octane" in quotes because octane in itself is a chemical composition. "Octane" rating is just a way to express resistance to detonation. What we see on the pumps is really AKI (R+M/2). Ethanol is used in all grades of gasoline to boost octane rating. You will see "May contain up to 10% ethanol" on some pumps.
Per gallon, E85 contains about 75% of the BTU's that gasoline does. So, it can only do 75% of the work at the best conditions. I wold only use it for highway cruising or if it was at least 25% cheaper than gasoline.

Re: FLEX FUEL with OCTANE BOOSTER?!

Not to mention its a little bit tough (corrosive) on seals. Not enough benefits to justify the use of it (IMO).
