Re: Flipper Glass

I've never had flipper glass. I won't know what I'm missing, but I can certainly see how it would be useful. I think I'll get by just fine without it.

I hardly think they make design decisions based on a single use case. I would venture to guess that 80% of the time, these vehicles are driven with visibility out of the back window. You can't say a decision is BS because it isn't applicable to all possible uses of a vehicle. I think this decision makes a lot of sense, if true.

Maybe bc of my seat height or my height it doesn't bother me. I have full view of the rear of the vehicle.

Re: Flipper Glass

I don't currently own a GC, so my opinion is based on wild speculation.

Ditto!

Also, for rear view when backing up, I believe almost all of the WK2's come with backup camera. Besides, who actually looks in their rear view or side mirrors these days... most are engrossed in looking at their smartphones. ;-)

Cheers,

On my 4 Runner the rear window rolled up and down. I used it all of the time. I can't open the tail gate with my garage door down so I just drop the driver side rear seat back and access the storage space that way. It works all right but the '14 should have a rear window you can open.

Re: Flipper Glass

I just picked up my 2014 and I don't notice any difference in the visibility from the 2011. I wonder if it was something to help increase aerodynamics to get that 1mpg. Now days every little counts to get towards the EPA goals.

Re: Flipper Glass

Here's the corporate spin:

"For 2014, the flipper glass has been eliminated, greatly enhancing rearward visibility and reducing weight."

Re: Flipper Glass

Does a different company or glass manufacturer make the different tailgate now?
What's the cost difference of this change?

Pardon my ignorance, but what about removing the flipper glass would equal 50 pounds?

I can see where 50 pounds is possible. You have the two hinges and u latch on the glass, then two struts to open the window and the entire locking mechanism inside the liftgate. Combined all that extra hardware may be 50 pounds or so.

For me, its just hard to think my rear door is 50lbs heavier than the 2014, but hey I have been known to be wrong before.... On many many occasions
