Re: For those who drive a Hemi 5.7

My mileage dropped to 9.5 and I changed the plugs and now I have been showing 15.5. My old plugs looked okay except for two of them showed signs that they had not been replaced recently, so much for a CPO car, they didn't do squat to it.
I also didn't think my plugs could of been the culprit but evidently they were.

Yep added my own. A slanted HEMI badge right below the overland badge on the passenger side rear. Looks good.

I have always been skeptical about what CPO really means realizing that dealers are likely to do as little as possible. I guess you always take a chance with them like with any vehicle, but especially a used one. This is one of the reasons I have stayed away. The notion of having a car thoroughly checked out and backed up by the manufacturer is generally appealing, but this and other stories like it I have heard make me realize it isn't the reality.

Lately, it's been my observation that most manufacturers are claiming 100,000 miles for spark plug life. Therefore, unless your CPO vehicle had 100,000 miles on it, why would you expect them to change the plugs? My '15 Hemi has 16 plugs, I believe. That's about $65 worth of plugs. Think a dealer would change them, if they didn't ABSOLUTELY have to?

I honestly don't see how you can be consuming a gallon of fuel in just over 6 miles on average, without black smoke belching from your tailpipes. That thing has got to be running unbelievably rich!

Re: For those who drive a Hemi 5.7

Welp, I have 16 MOPAR spark plugs coming tomorrow. It looks like buying a certified used car from Jeep is horseshit. There is some offbrand "NKG" plugs in there now. I'm hoping I see some pretty fast progress on my MPG... Or I'll be out another $95 for nothing.

NKG plugs are what the Mopar plugs are. But changing the plugs out will likely do the trick. They are a cheaper copper core plug (needed for the MDS somehow), and they definitely get worn by 30k or so. Good luck!

Re: For those who drive a Hemi 5.7

Thanks for the advice and the correction on the plug type. I'm also putting on 20" rims and brand new tires tomorrow (Up from 18s)... So that'll certainly not help my MPG, but if it's primarily the plugs I should still see my MPG meter bump significantly.

Re: For those who drive a Hemi 5.7

Just a minor correction but I think its NGK is what you guys meant, and for what its worth NGK makes a quality plug and is found original is a LOT of cars.

That's right, NGK, my bad. They might have been fine, but I didn't think they came original in the Jeep. Mine has 23k (just got it), so I am not really sure why there would be a different set of plugs in there besides the originals. My understanding is that they should be changed every 32k or so.

Ha ha, that's pretty funny. I looked at the first post and my brain automatically translated to NGK, and then I just typed it the same way. Now that you point it out it totally stands out.

As for sidebox, I just did the plugs in my hemi RAM at 30k about a month ago and definitely saw decent uptick in mileage. Same with my 05 GC hemi a few years ago. It's definitely easier on the Jeep, but plan a couple of hours as the driver side is a bit of a contortionist test.
