This is so funny to me! Even the Ford Exploerer forums seem to be biased towards the Grand Cherokees! Some negative comments I'm certain out of jealousy but in general people here seem to dig the Grand Cherokee.

Re: Ford Explorer forum

I considered the Explorer when I bought my Jeep, but I never drove it. I really didn't like the front end styling. It looks like a minivan.

Nice idea Sleeslak, I posted my exit from the Durango Forum. Funny stuff, my guys were a little harsher, but then back-tracked. It's funny cause I heard was them complaining they dont have the stuff we do - air suspension, power folding mirrors, etc.

I was looking at a Durango RT because it had a third row seat. Then I test drove an SRT and said too heck with the kids...they can walk.

Put them in one of those utility baskets out back, and tell them it is the 21st century version of a rumble seat.

PS. With an SRT, wouldn't they have to RUN? :-)

Re: Ford Explorer forum

This is great because my friends throughout the USA that own other rides tried to scare me with consumer reports stuff when buying the WK2, even with the Pentastar. My response was that none of the comparable rides were even close in the amenities department. Fords were ugly and they were redesigned to be people carriers just like the Nissan Pathfinder. I specifically didn't want a third row. The Nissan Murano didn't even compared and required premium fuel. It's not good on rural roads and has poor visibility. My buddy in the mountains of North Carolina bought and suggested a 4 Runner limited. He paid over $48K and financed over 8 years. Yikes! He needs a good off road vehicle as he has a steep climb and descent to his hilltop house. My thoughts when buying a Jeep were that I can do much of the maintenance myself or with the help of my FIL. He's retired but has mechanic friends with their own garage and lifts if needed.

The Toyota buyer is a musician and fantastic guitarist but probably only has the basic tools from Walmart. Even his driveway is dirt covered with loose stones and no garage.

I certainly didn't want another people mover. I have one kid left in the house and in just over 2 years she will be off to college. While the recalls are annoying, I like this much better and it's more fuel efficient than my 2004 GMC Envoy that was loaded. Plenty of aftermarket products and once you have had good HID lights going back is difficult. I've had a V6 Altima and a Buick Regal Turbo with HID and the Bi-Xenon lights on the 2011 WK2 limited package are great. I wish I had a better infotainment consume than the RER, but my speakers work fine. I do miss the Harmon Kardon stereo and speakers from the Buick but if I spent the $3K they charge as an upgrade I could get almost anything.

I love my kids but the only thing they get is money for education from the VA because I served and got very ill and that's part of the limited perks. Some kids may get some great wines, but my plans are to drink down this cellar I've spent 10 years filling up.

But what you like. There will always be jealous haters. The Grand Cherokee comes with more good features than anything I looked at. The list included all the German brands, where they were all ridiculously priced and under equipped plus my insurance would double. Volvo makes a nice ride but they don't look as good. Lexus, Infinti and Acura entries all had issues that ruled them out. None have off road capabilities that the WK2 has and an FJ Toyota just isn't my style. I would by a wrangler Sahara it rubicon first. However the WK2 is the best from all in one vehicle. I had a Land Rover. It was nowhere near as comfortable or equipped. Hi-grade fuel was mandatory and like the Envoy, the average fuel economy over 2 years stayed consistently at 16 mpg. I drive slow and predictably for defensive reasons. This area has really bad drivers.

Re: Ford Explorer forum

If the new Explorer was like my old Explorer, I'd likely have an Explorer.

But I don't need 3 rows (I have cats, they don't like the car no matter how many rows it has), and the new Explorer doesn't have the drive train.

I like the look of the new Explorers, and I owned 4 Fords before this Jeep. I have no problem with Fords. Simply the feature list left too many Musts unchecked, so I had to look elsewhere, and that led me here.

We have five kids so the SRT isn't the most practical of vehicles for us. I don't care, I bought the SRT for me. We have an AWD Chevy conversion van for the kids to trash with their dirty soccer cleats and leaky drinks. The SRT is my sanctuary and they all respect that.
