Blakey is on a distinguished road
My previous ride before my SRT was a ford G6E turbo (aussie)
To date, definately the best car i have ever owned
3 years, 75000km and not so much as a new battery
Hoping the SRT is half as good after three years

Hasn't it moved up on the list since they neutered it and turned it into nothing but a mall hopper?

I mean, one can hardly blame CR for down-rating a short wheelbase vehicle driven by drivers too stupid to check tire pressure, since down-rating the drivers would be politically incorrect. So now we all have monthly issues with TPMS.

I actually have no idea where the Exploder is in terms of reliability. I referenced it because, for whatever reason, Scott hates it with a burning passion.

The problem is that CR insists on lumping piddling problems in with vehicle disabling problems.

It doesn't take a lot of research [and in the past, CR themselves used to note their methodology] or even elementary knowledge of statistical methods to be aware that
the CR data is fatally flawed. With a very strong political bias dating back to before their Nader era.

Or anything else.
If you think knowledgeable people diss their reviews of autos, you should see the audiophiles critique their reports and recommendations.

OK, maybe they do blenders well.... but I wouldn't even use them for washing machines--too expensive to pay much attention to such a biased subset of survey
takers and too small datasets to be meaningful.

Re: FORD! Kickin' a$$ and takin' names! NOOOOOOT!!!

My last 4 cars were Fords, 2 Explorers, an F-150, and a fusion. '93, '97, '98, '07. I had > 250K miles in Explorers. I loved my Explorer(s). The new Explorer isn't the old Explorer, otherwise I would have picked one up without hesitation. My wife loves her Fusion.

That all said, how much of these issues are related to the infotainment system?

Apparently Ford is being plagued by their MyTouch system. I drove a Ford Edge, and it was a fine car, just didn't suit me. And the info system worked "well enough" (I only rented one for a couple of days). It didn't have Nav.

What we seem to be learning is that installing multimedia computers systems in to vehicle is apparently quite challenging. All of the systems seem to have their share of hatred towards them.

But it boils down to how one defines reliability, and I'm with the camp "if it's not stranding you on the side of the road, it's reliable". The lifestyle nuances, yea it's annoying when they fail, but it's not life or death.

The simple truth is, Ford is not messed up enough as a company, engineering team, market position, etc. to have this many cars on the "10 worst". But if the common infotainment system is roundly hated by all, and that criteria is enough to end up on this list, then fine. In that case I simply question the criteria for the list, not the car.

Also, these rankings are simply sorts based on some score. I don't know what that score is, but it only takes ".1" difference to be "lower" than some other vehicle.

The real "problem" facing the consumer today is that pretty much ALL of the cars today are just flat out amazing feats of engineering. They're all very high quality. Even Fords, even Jeeps.

We're getting awfully jaded today. Folks should look back to when we had to push our cars up hill in the snow both ways just to get them back from the shop.

Re: FORD! Kickin' a$$ and takin' names! NOOOOOOT!!!

I turned over 250,000 miles in my F-250 last month and have done nothing but routine maintenance on it over the years. I've also had several F150s and Expeditions over the years with nothing but good luck. I will agree the MyTouch system is horrible....but as far as reliability I've never had trouble out of the Fords I've owned. I honestly hope I have as good of luck with my new Jeep!

Re: FORD! Kickin' a$$ and takin' names! NOOOOOOT!!!

My buddy had a '79 F-150 with greater than 500k miles, most of those on a farm working hard for those miles, and he never had an issue. Still had the original seals on the motor when he sold it.

Jeep isn't far off of that list according to CR. If they base their reliability ratings off of something easily resolvable like uconnect issues, who the eff cares what they think? Reliability should be based on mechanical things breaking, not software.

Re: FORD! Kickin' a$$ and takin' names! NOOOOOOT!!!

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to give my .02. I have owned the following. 1979 Ford Econoline extended van, 2000 Ford Mustang, 1985 VW Polo (german spec), 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, 1994 Pontiac Grand Am, 2011 Honda Civic, 2006 Chevy Trailblazer, 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

I bought the 79 van as a work vehicle when I laid carpet, it ran but hardly. It would stall out at red lights and I had to start it with a screw driver, not in the ignition but hop out, pop hood and cross over the starter solenoid. It was old when I bought it and didn't have high expectations when I got it for $500.

The 2000 Ford Mustang I bought with 77k miles on it. It was already 5 years old and hadn't been taken care of very well. (I bought it from one of those rip-off buy here pay here places for 10k with a 17% interest rate with 0 credit when I was 19 and just out of basic training. I did not make the wisest decision back then and didn't really understand what I was getting into. A few months after I bought it I parked it. It sat for about 10 months only being driven for 2 weeks when I came home on leave from Germany. I ended up selling it at about 130k miles. I only had the regular maintenance done and had no issues with it.

The 1985 VW Polo I bought while I was stationed in Germany. It was great on gas, and may not have been the greatest vehicle but again I had no issues with and it was a great deal for 500 euros.

I bought a 2002 Olds Alero V6. Bought it with 57k miles. After 3 days of ownership the tranny started getting iffy when shifting. Took it back to the used car lot I bought it from and they sent the tranny off to be rebuilt. After that the only thing that went out was the drivers window motor.

Next car was the 1994 Pontiac Grand Am, I bought this from an older couple that hardly drove. It had 70k miles on it (in 2008) when I took ownership. I bought this for $1000. The AC worked for about 2 weeks when I would then have to recharge the system. The rear drivers window motor went shortly after, then the drivers window motor a couple weeks later (actually my wife was driving this car the day I was replacing the window motor on her Alero, when she came to swap vehicles she pulled down to the shop behind the house and rolled the window down then it stopped working. That blew my, mind 2 different cars same driver and 2 window motors in one day.) Anyways after about 50k miles the tranny in this car was done and the sway bar link sheered off shreading the boot over the cv halfshaft. Traded it in for the Trailblazer with a $600 credit and I was happy.

2006 Chevy Trailblazer, bought with 60k miles. Had it for 2 years and put 40k miles on it. Starter went out 5 days after taking ownership. Replaced the idler pulley because it made an annoying squeal/chirp sometimes. Sold it at 101k miles. The CEL came on when it pleased and the dealership couldn't diagnose it. Traded it for the 2012 JGC.

Now the 2011 Honda Civic. Bought it new in March of '11. 30k miles so far and nothing other than routine maintenance (knocks on wood).

2012 Jeep grand cherokee bought new April of 2012. I'm at 38xxx miles so far the rear hatch button for lock/unlock has been replaced, and the head has been replaced all under warranty.

Now that I have given my history of vehicle ownership I have learned a few things. Routine maintenance goes a long way. Also periodic inspections such as walking around before and after a trip looking for leaks and listening for sounds that weren't there before can help before something actually breaks.

Another thing to note is that manufacturers make most of their money in the aftermarket. With that being said they generally design their parts to last as long as the warrany covers them. Todays economy has manufacturers squeezing every penny out of a vehicle that they can. Each vehicle sold is not a tremendous profit as you would think. There are so many pockets that get a slice of the pie that new vehicle sales are only a small percentage of a manufacturer's profit.

When you buy a vehicle expect that things will fail, but with routine maintenance you can decrease the chances of something major to fail, and remember the parts on your vehicle are mostly likely produced by the lowest bidder.

Vehicles now are very complex and when you add in all the other creature comforts your adding additional items that can fail. I typically buy low optioned vehicles for this very reason.

Sorry for the long post but I don't see any manufacturer better than another. When I am buying a new vehicle I determine what I would use it for and what features I want.
