The fact that it was a rental and already has so many miles put me off, but I figured if I could get a good enough deal it might be worth it. We've been haggling over the price for the past week and they won't seem to budge below $36,150 OTD. KBB lists the average fair market price for this configuration at $34,254 before TTT, and tax here is 3%.

If I go through with the deal, I was thinking of purchasing a Lifetime MaxCare warranty just to quell any anxiety about rental-induced wear. Online quotes say the warranty will cost around $2,405.00. I live in NC and my understanding is that it's one of the few states the warranty can be transferred, so that might help my resale value in the future.

If I go this route, I'll end up roughly $38,555 out of pocket for a lifetime warrantied WK2. If I pass on the Lifetime MaxCare, I'm $36,150 out of pocket for a WK2 with basically 6k miles left on the bumper-to-bumper and a 7 year/100k miles powertrain warranty. Is this a good deal, or am I missing something and would be better off chipping in a bit more and buying new?
What area are you in? I just got a local Charlotte dealer quote of $41,300 (pre-tax) on a brand new 2014 Overland 4x4. I'm sure you could get a 2014 Limited 4x4 luxII (they had plenty) for $36-38k ... DM me if you want the dealers info!

My Dad used to always say with used cars, "You're buying miles", meaning the fewer the better. Plus like many have said in this thread, I wouldn't touch a rental with a 10 foot pole and somebody else's money.

From what I've seen over the past few weeks researching Grand Cherokee prices you should be able to score a new 2014 model for just a little more than that price. Best of luck!

That post is worthless without pictures, or at least more gory details!!!!

According to the rental resale places, rentals get regular maintenance, blah blah blah, compared to private vehicles. I'd guess that the maintenance is good enough to keep the warranty in effect for the period of rental ownership, and not one drop of oil more.

OK, not everybody beats the snot out of rentals, somewhere in the universe.

croft1972: Care to expound on the reason for your ban?

A co-worker of mine used to take rentals into the mountains and leave it in second gear for a few hour drive.

I (on the other hand) used to find humor in E-brake stops in rentals. I would find a more cared for car at your price for these reasons.

There are a few things that caused it.

First was that we would have the Rent-A-Car Olympics... You would drive down the street and turn into a parking lot. The second your rear tires crossed the sidewalk, you would have to put the car in PARK. The person who could make it into a parking space the furthest from the street would win.

Second was that in a span of 4 months, I broke 5 cars. everything from transmissions to front ends from jumping rail road crossings...

Thank God for Rental Insurance..

Oh and the time we put a 150 shot of NOS on a Maxima. If you Google NOS-Xima you might find some stuff about it...

Re: Former Rental Deal

I'm in the insurance business. Trust me, you do not want to purchase a previously used vehicle that was a rental.

Re: Former Rental Deal

the most beat up 30k miles there is.....I'd have to have thousands below current value before I would even look at it, and even then would be leery of it. you need to take a big step back and really evaluate what you're doing. jmho....

Re: Former Rental Deal

Not to beat a dead horse here but.....doesn't sound like a good deal! I just purchased my 2014 Overland 4x4 for about $41,000 new, I'm sure you can get new Limiteds for close to or even less than $38 grand now.....

A friend of mine recently worked at a well known name brand car rental place at MIA airport. He would tell me stories of the lazy service techs there that would mark off they did the maintenance work (such as oil changes) but actually didn't do the oil change. They were just lazy, didn't care and apparently poor supervision to be able to get away with it. I was shocked at the stories - even some safety items they were lazy about. Maybe it happens just in Miami...but I doubt it. So, I highly question the assurance that rental cars are well maintained.

Well that's a resounding "no" and enough to convince me against the deal. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Looks like I'll be ponying up for a new one!

Is not restricted to Miami. If you think renters treat rental vehicles poorly, the maintenance supervisors are not exactly encouraged to bust budgets, where "paper maintenance" is not uncommon since it typically doesn't hurt a vehicle before it is out on the agencies sales lot, or if not that good, on regular dealer lots.
I know someone who got good service out of a former rental, but had a relative who was a mech at one of the majors up in Oregon. Lets just note he would never consider buying a former rental---and not because of the drivers.
