Former Rental Deal

I've been in discussions with a dealership about a CPO 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 with V6 and Luxury II package. It was a former rental purchased directly from Enterprise and already has 30,000 miles. The fact that it was a rental and already has so many miles put me off, but I figured if I could get a good enough deal it might be worth it. We've been haggling over the price for the past week and they won't seem to budge below $36,150 OTD. KBB lists the average fair market price for this configuration at $34,254 before TTT, and tax here is 3%.

If I go through with the deal, I was thinking of purchasing a Lifetime MaxCare warranty just to quell any anxiety about rental-induced wear. Online quotes say the warranty will cost around $2,405.00. I live in NC and my understanding is that it's one of the few states the warranty can be transferred, so that might help my resale value in the future.

If I go this route, I'll end up roughly $38,555 out of pocket for a lifetime warrantied WK2. If I pass on the Lifetime MaxCare, I'm $36,150 out of pocket for a WK2 with basically 6k miles left on the bumper-to-bumper and a 7 year/100k miles powertrain warranty. Is this a good deal, or am I missing something and would be better off chipping in a bit more and buying new?

Way too high. I would have to have them throw lifetime warranty in there if I was buying a rental vehicle. 36,000 otd with lifetime warranty. I bet you could get a brand new 14 limited lux 2 for 38,000 otd with good negotiating.

Re: Former Rental Deal

NO WAY MAN, terrible deal... like he said above you can get a limited for around 38 new with zero miles if you shop around.

Screw buying a rental ever! RUN from this deal.

Re: Former Rental Deal

I would NEVER consider such a deal. And apparently you've NEVER rented a car.

For a rental with 30,000 miles I would be willing to pay around $20,000 (or half of its new car cost) to make it worth taking the risks. Some of us have factory ordered 2014 that occasionally spend time in the dealership (mine included) and we take care of our cars. A car that belonged to several hundred customers has been abused in every way possible - from the family with kids that rented it out on vacation, and the kids puked in the rear seat and drew doodles on the leather to the self-nominated "authority" on all things off-road who mercilessly took the Jeep on a 4WD adventure to the blonde that kept trying to turn a knob the wrong way until it broke the retainer pins.

Re: Former Rental Deal

I agree with above. I've seen somebody pricing 40k for overland for left over 2014.

That car is probably 2 years old and an early build (meaning issues) as they came out early 2013.

30k miles and 2 year old for the price of new one? Are they throwing in Brooklyn Bridge into that deal s well?

Something was said once by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear.

The fastest car in the world is a "hired car" (rental car to the Brits). Beware any that have had 30,000 miles of punishment.

Re: Former Rental Deal

That price is way too high for a rental. I wouldn't touch it and at 36k, you are into new-ish territory.

croft1972: Care to expound on the reason for your ban?

A co-worker of mine used to take rentals into the mountains and leave it in second gear for a few hour drive.

I (on the other hand) used to find humor in E-brake stops in rentals. I would find a more cared for car at your price for these reasons.

Re: Former Rental Deal

Price is WAY TOO HIGH..... No deal. If it was rented by an executive the whole time who put a lot of miles on it is one thing (still too high though) but a general rental with 30K miles. No deal, not even close.
