Forward Collision Warning

Just picked up a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland HEMI 4x4.

Do you have to enable adaptive cruise control in order for the Forward Collision Warning to work?

FCW works well when ACC is on and active on the highway, but not when you are just driving around normally and have the ACC off.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

FCW is a system that is always on regardless of your cruise control status. Just try it, come up quickly to a car in front of you, it will start beeping at you ;-) I can't remember if FCW was something you can turn on or off, so if yours is for sure not working, then go through your options menu and make sure it's turned on.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

Unless the 2014 works differently, FCW only turns on the "BRAKE" text in the EVIC and an audible alarm. It should work the same whether ACC is on or off. FCW does not actually brake the Jeep. Only ACC does that, but not at full braking.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

Thanks. I have ACC completely off and the FCW on with the Far Setting enabled. However, nothing occurs.... I have tried nearly rolling into the back of another car on freeway and street roads multiple times and NOTHING happens. Really unfortunate too because this is brand new and there are less than 100 miles on the Jeep.

Guess its off to the dealership. Any idea what the repair time is on FCW and if they cover rental/loaner?

Do you have your foot lightly on the brake pedal while testing the FCW?

Re: Forward Collision Warning

drwilki2, what you explain that you want to happen could be considered dangerous. You only want automatic braking when you are in a situation that cruise control permits i.e. on the highway. If you are on a back country road that has a right hand turn coming up but also has a left deceleration lane to turn left in the right turn, the FCW would alert you thinking that you are going to drive into the car that's slowing down. Now in this situation, you are in control of the car and any sudden braking not done by you would be dangerous. Now, this same scenario on a highway would be much safer but the Jeep is not smart enough to know what type of road you are on so they must set the braking option to be activated with the cruise control

I hope this makes sense. Also, another piece of information is that even though cruise control is off, you still get an audible warning, just no braking unless it's on.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

Sounds like some folks are not sure how the FCW system works on the WK2.

With ACC Off:
FCW will Only Warn of a impending collision. It will provide a Visual and Audible warning but will not engage the brakes.

With ACC On:
FCW will warn of an impending collision (Audible & Visual) and will apply up to 25% of the maximum braking power if needed.

Not quite. FCW will not apply the brakes under any circumstances. ACC will apply up to 25% of the maximum braking power if needed. FCW does not have to be enabled for the ACC to apply the brakes. They are two separate systems although they do share the same sensor.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) IF
EQUIPPED

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) increases the driving
convenience provided by cruise control while traveling
on highways and major roadways. However, it is not a
safety system and not designed to prevent collisions.
ACC will allow you to keep cruise control engaged in
light to moderate traffic conditions without the constant
need to reset your cruise control. ACC utilizes a radar
sensor designed to detect a vehicle directly ahead of you.
NOTE:
If the sensor does not detect a vehicle ahead of you,
ACC will maintain a fixed set speed.
If the ACC sensor detects a vehicle ahead, ACC will
apply limited braking or acceleration (not to exceed
the original set speed) automatically to maintain a
preset following distance, while matching the speed of
the vehicle ahead.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

Thanks. FCW is definitely not working. No audible warning/No brake signs, even in the event of a near rear-ending.

Taking it into the nearest dealer on Monday for repair under warranty. Sadly, I have discovered other issues as well that need attention.

Re: Forward Collision Warning

Hi Summit... no i do not put my foot on the brake pedal until I am literally about to plow into the back of another vehicle. I've tried everything... FCW warning simply does not work at all which is really strange.

Now, to make matters stranger, FCW works fine if I am in ACC mode on the highway and a vehicle slams on its breaks in front of me... I'll get the 25% applied brake pressure and then audible/visual 'brake!' warnings which is nice.
