Most vehicles these days use drive by wire technology. The gas pedal has been this way for some time in most vehicles. The shifter in the 14 is drive by wire. Is there an actual mechanical connection between the new shifter and the transmission? I doubt it but who knows.

If not a retrofit could be done. It would be costly and probably the reason they are reluctant to go down this road.

OMGosh --- the photo of that gated shifter (don't know what vehicle it is from) looks horrific compared to the 14/15 indent shifter.

This sounds right. I believe it is illegal to sell/deliver to the consumer a new vehicle with an outstanding recall.

On the other hand, it begs the question: why are they offering decent incentives on vehicles that can't be sold?

I personally don't ever look to see what gear I am in in my 2014, it is all done by feel just like all the other shifters I have gotten used to before. People are just putting too much blame on this shifter versus being a diligent driver. I can find fault with every shifter out there - a lot of the old school stick type shifters people accidentally bump while driving on occasion. I can't wait for the shifter recall software to come out so that we can rule out everything but driver error and put the responsibility where it belongs --- on the driver!
the shifter problem is not a problem difficulty, it's a problem with safety. Sometimes it's being left in gear inadvertently and the Jeeps are rolling causing damage to other vehicles, the Jeep or even people, that's the problem. If it was just difficulty they wouldn't recall it, they'd just put training videos out and apologize.

Looks like it may be a crimp in the wiring harness.

Oh, shift: Fiat Chrysler recalls Jeep models for bad transmission wiring harness - Roadshow

If that comment is true that they can't sell until 4Q, assume they will have to literally give them away with incentives.

You do realize that this has nothing to do with the major recall on the 2014 and 2015 models, right?

That's from a WK grand Cherokee. Had one for over 7 years and never had a single issue with it.

Congrats on purchasing your 2015 GC on the 6th of May. It is my second Grand Cherokee but the first WK2. Anyhow, I checked on the Mopar recall site and mine came up for the S-27 (think that was the number-referring to the shifter anyhow). Mine was built on 11-15-2015. This recall came out on 5-4-2016 from what I read. If you happen to find this note I would suggest you check yours too at this site posted below--. If they were going to freeze selling them (which they aren't doing--you would think it would have been before we bought ours.) So far I am having no trouble with the shifter, but of course being very careful. I guess it is good to give us a warning of what could happen if we get careless. I hope you are enjoying your new WK2 too.

Funny, the mopar site does not list that my 15 has a recall...
