I'd be fine if they sent me home with my new car as a "loaner" with my plates on it/covered by my insurance until the recall "fix" comes through. In fact, that would be a smart move for them, as it would pretty much ensure that I won't go anywhere else. If this drags on past June I either want out so I can shop for a 2016 JGC (or something else, though I am loathe to go outside the Mopar family) or I want more of a price consideration than I have already gotten because I will be purchasing what amounts to a two-year-old vehicle.
I would go talk to the GM about getting a 2016 instead. You have a pretty good negotiating spot. While its certainly not the dealers fault for this recall or their inability to sell to you, it will certainly be there loss of revenue when you go to buy a ford.

My recommendation would be to sit down with the dealership GM, dont talk with a sales guy because he'll be limited in what he can do. Negotiate how to get into a 2016 while keeping everything on your contract exactly the same. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

PS- I sold my 14 Grand Cherokee Limited for a 2015 Explorer. I had it 6 months before I sold that and went back to a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland. The explorer is a nice vehicle but has nothing on the Jeep. I say wait it out as the last resort, negotiate for a 2016 asap

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

I agree with Protect'...rather than have a deposit on a 2015 that you may not be able to take home until it's over two years old by model year, negotiate on a 2016. The red is slightly different but many folks seem to like it. And the 2016 doesn't have the 'issue' that's holding the 2015 hostage.

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

Yup. That sounds like a winning idea. Instead of jumping through hoops for the 15, see how motivated the GM is to make a quick sale on the 16. As previously mentioned, don't waste your time with a sales rep. They can't authorize anything, without management anyway. You have nothing to lose by trying this and you may end up with a killer deal on a 16 and the car you really want.

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

Frankly I am tired of these recalls they do not have parts for. At least you are not waiting for one that has killed people and is related to high humidity (Florida).

Since FCA is not providing loaners for that one (or, in fact, any advice at all), don't hold your breath.

ps called Cares - opened a ticket and said to take to dealer if concerned. Asked what they could do, since defect is not visible. Did not get an answer.

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

Good news, looks like they have figured out a way to pop out the software fix faster. A week ago FCA sent this letter to dealers:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...6V240-6687.pdf

"The timing to develop the software updates required to remedy this situation has been accelerated. FCA now anticipates having the software updates required to remedy the above vehicles no later than July/August of 2016."

To those who have not received a letter or get no hits with the VIN recall search. FCA sent this email out to dealers 5/19:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...6V240-4494.pdf

"To find out if you have any effected vehicles please follow the directions below:

*VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: The effected vehicle VIN#'s may not yet be loaded into the FCA recall inquiry system at the time of this notice being sent. It is highly recommended that you do not perform any effected vehicle/VIN# related inquiries in regards to this or any FCA recall until the dealer letter release date.
"

I assume the dealer release date is when the recall is actually ready for prime time so they would have vetted all the VIN's for notification by then? All '14's and '15's are involved just a matter of when Mr. Computer catches up:

FWIW, the NHTSA actually issued the stop-sale order 4/27 and it does not cover any used (the reg states it as "after the first purchase of the vehicle or equipment in good faith other than for resale") officially but a dealer would have a tough time prevailing if they sell a used vehicle with a known safety defect especially with damage/injury since that's the only time it will be brought up. The smart dealers are not selling a single used/new 14/15 until fixed, the short-sighted ones are. To me this whole thing is a non-issue but then again FCA says the "potentially" related claims involve 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage and 41 injuries.

NHTSA stop-sale order:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/cs...6V240-6576.pdf

"Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect. This prohibition does not apply once the motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment has been remedied according to the manufacturer's instructions."

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

I would guess that there have been a sufficient number of complaints and a few incidents to warrant the investigation. Then, realizing the shifter is not idiot proof and the preponderance of idiots driving cars, the Feds decided FCA must do something about it. Yeah... What a PITA!

No doubt, but recalls will be increasingly focused on the new threat to vehicle safety...Humans using the e-enabled "feature" that was meant to keep error prone humans from making mistakes... manufacturers can't win either way.

Re: Freeze on new 2015 sales

I have to imagine that all the dealers holding MY15 inventory are putting a bit of, um...pressure...on FCA to deal with this a bit quicker than late summer. Inventory carrying costs are not pretty for a long-term stop-sale situation for these dealers...
