Got any evidence that that is why? Perhaps FCA thought their customers were too smart to just exit a vehicle that wasn't in park.

They would have been wrong in my case. I did that once (in my wife's Mercedes, as it happened). Car backed on down the driveway without me, ripping the gas meter off the side of the house as it went.

Long story ...

Hmmm ... maybe Mercedes had me in mind?

I wonder if he consulted for Takata at any time?

People drive more recklessly when the know there is more safety features to protect them in event of a crash... When you wear your seatbelt you drive more aggressively, when you know you got all those airbags you don't drive as cautiously.

Just like over padded football helmets.....let's use my head as a weapon cuz I got this big ol' helmet on.....no outside damage so keep doing it over and over again. I think it was Lou Holtz that said to solve the concussion issue just prohibit helmets. Seems counterintuitive, but correct.

My point exactly

This recent recall is evidence enough.

If FCA had the foresight (like Mercedes for instance) that there was a good chance a portion of the American public would most likely have issues with a new "fly by wire" gear selector, they would have implemented redundant software to combat the issue.

Simple as that.

I do agree with this comment. It's going to have to be a software fix. I can't imagine FCA ripping out the shifters on over 800k vehicles.

When are car companies going to figure out OTA updates??

Wouldn't enabling OTA updates make our vehicles more hackable, not less?

That is always a risk but no reason security can't be enabled to prevent it. Car companies just aren't used to it. If anything I'd prefer a download to USB option than working with a dealership. But they won't likely give up that control for a long time.

yes I agree they wont give that up without kicking and screaming or extreme competitive pressure if other manufactures go that way. Any way they can get that vehicle in the dealer service door so they can ty to sell other premature or extra optional services as a "required service" they will hold onto as long as possible. Pushing unneeded or premature services on uneducated customers is where they make tons of money. That 120k Tcase fluid change that some push at 30k which cost them less than $10 and 10 minute that they charge $200 for or that trans flush on the 8spd they want near $1000 for anything to get people in the door to push these high profit items like this they will hold on to until the bitter end.

I dropped off a rental car at ATL yesterday and saw a fleet of grounded WK2 at the rental car garage.
