Simple as that.
I think the "recall" is pretty bogus. There is no need for it to be at the level of a "recall" with full grounding on this issue. The vehicle is safe and not vehicle is perfectly safe or we'd all be riding in tanks surrounded by air cushions going 5 mph.

The federally mandated MPG targets should be "recalled" as that has decreased safety enormously by making cars lighter and less structurally sound otherwise.

I don't get the rental freeze thing. Is that common in the case of recalls? Have all the vehicles with Takata airbags that blow up and skewer folks with shrapnel been mothballed on rental lots?

Seriously? So if a vehicle is subject to an open recall, it can neither be rented nor sold, new or used?

only safety recalls and used not law yet....strong discussion and planning to make it registration based since only about 75% of vehicles get the recall done....soon u will not b able to register (new, transfer) with open safety recalls on the VIN....

Re: Freeze on RENTAL recalled vehicles too! Oh my...

What makes no sense on the "ground stop" of so called "safety" recalls is that it ground stops vehicles where NO SOLUTION is available yet. What kind of stupidity is that? The cost of these "ground stops" far outweighs safety issues --- at least with respect this shifter software. There is NO SOLUTION available yet!!!

Why not do a ground stop say effective 30 days AFTER a solution is WIDELY available? Or have some tiered ground stop number of days depending on how many vehicles, how complex the recall to fix, etc. regarding the realistic number of days to fix it all? A zero tolerance ground stop policy is so ridiculously expensive that it will stifle the implementation of innovation and improvements --- including safety innovations and improvements as I have previously commented on.

Can you imagine having your USED vehicle under contract to sell and the day before the closing a recall is issued which prevents it? Talk about pulling the rug out from under people for very very little reason. At some point, common sense needs to prevail. The federal government is just going regulation bonkers ... no wonder people are fed up.

It would be tough to enforce stop sales on used private party transactions since those are governed by the states. Even used dealers (not FCA) would be hard to enforce, again licensed by the states.

Dan I hear you and agree. Simple truth is:

THIS...

"As of April 12, 2016, FCA US has identified approximately 700 field reports potentially related to this issue which includes 212 crashes, 308 claims of property damage and 41 injuries."

PLUS...our litigious society

PLUS...more attorney's than flies at a July 4th picnic

EQUALS...CYA ground/sale stops....

it's only going to get worse...

well since "reports" for the airbag debacle only happen with injury/death it's low (but not to the families of the injured/killed):

10 deaths
100 injuries
63,800,000-68,800,000 recalled vehicles (original 28.8m + 35-40m new)

I think that rentals would be far more likely to have roll-off crashes caused by the shifter since it isnt common for most drivers. While I don't think this deserves recall status I could see why rental companies would want them grounded. For the most part I'm happy with the shifter in my 2l014 unless I'm in hurry in a parking lot.

It is 100% operator error. There is no defect like in the airbag recall. The two are simply not comparable and irrelevant in that regard. Just because you can later design software more idiot-proof doesn't make the original software defective.

My question is, how many such incidents happen with vehicle that have a typical shifter?

News today that a Tesla Model X crashed and driver insisting she did nothing wrong while the "black box" says she pressed the accelerator 100% down. My point is, people will blame the Jeep shifter even if it wasn't because it is easy to blame, but not necessarily the actual cause.

Tesla logs show that Model X driver hit the accelerator, Autopilot didn’t crash into building on its own | Electrek
