Fuel octane rating what's best?

Just a question regarding fuel octane ratings for my new GC hemi which I'm told will be arriving any day now (won't hold my breath), in Australia we generally have a choice of the following, 91 octane with 10% ethanol blend, 91 octane regular, 95 octane premium and 98 octane ultimate..... My dilemma is l think l read somewhere not to use anything higher than regular fuel in the GC, though generally most people l talk to say that 98's the way to go in V8's..... any thoughts?

Taken from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

Quote:
Anti-Knock Index (AKI)

In most countries, including Australia and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States and some other countries, like Brazil, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON, called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI, and often written on pumps as (R+M)/2). It may also sometimes be called the Pump Octane Number (PON).

Difference between RON and AKI

Because of the 8 to 10 point difference noted above, the octane rating shown in the United States is 4 to 5 points lower than the rating shown elsewhere in the world for the same fuel. See the table in the following section for a comparison.
The conversion for OZ would be:

V6 = 91 RON
V8 = 95 RON

That should be printed on the label on your gas filler cover.

Re: Fuel octane rating what's best?

Most people in Australia don't know octane ratings here and the US are different. We use RON they use AKI ratings.
Europe use RON as well.

Octane

US AKI to AU RON
87 91.1
88 92.2
89 93.2
90 94.3
91 95.3
92 96.4
93 97.4
94 98.5
95 99.5
96 100.6
97 101.6
98 102.7
99 103.7
100 104.8

We have here,
BP 91, 95, 98 RON 87, 91, 94 AKI
Shell 91, 95 RON
caltex 91, 95, 98 RON

Re: Fuel octane rating what's best?

Put whatever you want in it. I don't think it matters in the real world. In internet land, it's life or death but... I have run a few tanks of 87 in mine, a few tanks of 89, and *gasp* even a tank or 2 or 93 octane. But my Hemi still runs fine no matter what gas is in it. I have settled on 89 octane simply because it's only a few cents more per gallon but I do mix a fair amount of 87 octane in there from my gas cans. And yes, I have put 87 octane gas that has sat in plastic gas cans after a few weeks and it still ran fine.

I have used 3 year old fuel out of sealed jerry cans in modern engines, no problems. Even in my 110cc twin model aircraft engine.
Fuel wont spoil if it is sealed.
I never heard about fuel spoiling until I got on the Internet forums.
But fuel in bulk storage gas stations, tanks are vented then yes all the goodies will evaporate of. (ex gas tanker driver)
