I see a lot of that here in Az. in the Summer months. I don't see how much more dangerous it could be than having a half dozen cars start up and pull in and out right next to you while you're filling. That happens constantly at busy stations. Especially at morning rush hour.

Your a/c isn't going to help you if your can goes up in flames and, in Georgia it's against the law to fill with the engine running.

A Mythbusters episode did a thing on this, and it takes quite a bit to get a fire or explosion. I think they had to mist gas on a lighter flame in order to get anything to happen. The cell phone didn't cause any issues, and people have been playing up that "danger" for years. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do. Just that the danger of doing it is way over played.
