Re: FYI - Ford Explorer vs. GC review

Let's see Chrysler write a comparison like that with the GC besting the explorer. That review was so dumb. I think both cars are nice but Ford wrote that article like a middle school student. I guess because the explorer only has 1 4wd option, that makes it better. Along with the 2 extra seats in the back... wowwwwwwwwww.

Re: FYI - Ford Explorer vs. GC review

Yeah, the Ford Explorer is way to wide. I think the new GC is a little over the limit too.. i don't know where the designer park they're cars. Must be a different planet.

Wow 90"? even though the GC fits how do you get out of the car? It leaves you 7" to open the door on either side.

Re: FYI - Ford Explorer vs. GC review

Ford must be getting pretty desperate to put out a slash-and-burn piece like that. It's like in politics: If you don't have anything worthwhile to offer, call the other guy nasty names.

The Explorer competes with minivans, not the GC.

The Explorer is getting compared to the GC because they're both new and they look to be similar, but in reality, there's a VERY different design philosophy behind them. The Grand Cherokee is what it's always been- an upscale (not quite luxury, but more than basic) SUV with excellent off road capability.

The Explorer has gone from being a traditional truck based SUV to being a minivan replacement- its competition isn't the GC, it's the GMC Acadia/Chevrolet Traverse and the Toyota Highlander. It's an on road family hauler now. The Durango might be a better even-up comparison to the Explorer; it's optimized more for that market, even if it isn't quite the exact same vehicle.

Folks may cross shop them, but that difference in philosophy means buyers aren't going to have a hard time choosing between them.

Re: FYI - Ford Explorer vs. GC review

That review is total junk, I just talked to my friend who is desperate replacing 2 years old Ford Edge on 2011 JGC and he told me that I shouldn’t even think about Ford's this days, all this new models are horrible in quality. He is not getting out of dealer, driving rented car for month already.

Emphasis on the bottom line.. the whole article was pretty vauge and didn't have too many facts but it was still a good read.

The Explorer posts 25mpg compared to Jeep's 22mpg but the Jeep averaged better fuel with only five gears compared to six?? I still don't get the rush towards an eight speed transmission

edit: the article mentioned that the change in elevation made the six spped u=hunt for the better gear when the five speed in the Jeep had higher ratios so it was able to sustain the same gear for longer.

I can only speak for the 8 speed in the cayenne, and that is a dream.

Re: FYI - Ford Explorer vs. GC review

You're probably right.. I know that the five speed is a slush box, maybe I just need to do my homework. I did find a great article on the ZF transmission:

"It can handle up to 516 lb-ft of torque"
