A scan of one article seems to indicate that it was audio only, but I didn't delve into it too deeply.
I know Waze will not work with CarPlay and Google(who owns Waze) has stated there are no plans for it. Waze is my #1 reason for wanting the new radio. So I'm thinking of switching from iPhone to Android. The new radio supposedly will also support Android Auto.

Thank you, if they do in fact upgrade the hardware after the new year, any idea if we purchase the new stock radio, would it be a direct swap and drop in? Has anyone done a stock head unit upgrade before on previous jeep years?

That is what I hope will be possible but I have to consider that it might not be practical for what ever reason.

There is a company on the web that sells OEM head units and shows a video of upgrading a UConnect 5.0 to 8.4 in a Cherokee and they included some sort of USB key to unlock it after install. $1400 for the current 8.4AN head unit.

I'm little concerned that things like Active Noise Cancelation in summit continues to work.

Also new car play head unit is LTE. Is the cell antenna correct for LTE? Who knows. Probably. Little gotchas like that is what I would be concerned about.

Just be a little patient. Within a few months of the release a search on Google will find your answers. If there is a video on how to switch a volume control to the other side of a steering wheel (that one surprised me) there will be tons of posts about a new radio.

When the MY14 JGCs were about to be introduced we were warned to pick our radios carefully because you had to keep whatever came with the car. That was true, until someone proved it wasn't.

Re: Gave up waiting for MY 2017 Car Play and Bought a 2017 Summit Today

I have had silver and gray cars for the last 12 years and thought I would go to the other extreme. My first white car ever. Still second guessing myself a little but I'm sure she will grow on me. Hated the light gray headliner the first time I saw it but didn't really mind it driving home. The light color does make the inside feel less dark and confined. I just worry about keeping it clean.

I always hated the chrome so got the Cali edition. Before she arrived, I had already started looking into wrapping the window trim and powder coating the wheels. Now that I see the brushed look, I think I'll hold off the wrap for a while. Love the white / black contrast but the Cali looks good as is. Windows tinted and clear bra applied today.

Thursday I'm getting the Bel STiR+ installed at ABT (Chicagoans know this store) and will also have a front and rear dash cam hardwired.

Only other immediate thing is to decide on which rubber mats to get and decide if to install the front plate. Rather not but know the Chicago meter maids will ticket me the first chance they get.

Re: Gave up waiting for MY 2017 Car Play and Bought a 2017 Summit Today

Congrats !!!

White looks nice, like black, when clean. My wife has a White VW CC.
If I were to get "white" again I would try the Ivory. The Ivory California combo would look real nice.

I'd think twice about the STi-R plus. Unless you plan to shut K Band off.
It's VERY chatty with Blind Spot Monitors. It's great on KA.

I had one in my 2014 Limited and 2015 Overland.
I now run a Valentine One with V1Driver iPhone App. There is also an Android App (YaV1)
Much cheaper, better balance and better situational awareness with the arrows and much quieter.
Not quite as good on Ka but good enough.

Only run STi-R plus if radar detector is illegal where you live or you don't need K-Band.

This is my favorite look for the luxury JGC, White California Edition. Whenever I see one on the road it makes me second guess for a minute how I ended up in a Max Steel Overland.

Yeah, but....

Do you actually know anyone at all that has has had their Android phone hacked? I sure don't.

The only issue I ever hear from anyone is them simply losing the phone - or dropping and breaking the thing.

Is it potentially easier to side load a malicious app in Android? Of course. However, that's doesn't explain why proven apps like Maps or Waze would be blocked other than Apple doesn't want to make it easier for Google to step on their turf.

This is an Apple vs. Google thing, not a security thing and it's pathetic. Only the customer is hurt in these petty situations.

I said the reason for HARDWIRE requirement on Car Play *might* partly be security. It would not surprise me.

Phones are hacked all the time. What planet are you on. It's really just a matter of how much work it is and how deep you go. And how valuable what is taken. Just something misusing your birth day, SS or phone number could be considered identity theft. Or just an app accessing your photos or GPS location without permission can be considered a security breach.

I agree, the Apps lock out is PARTLY a Google vs Apple thing. They are both taking responsibility (as in liability) over what is allowed to run on the car screen.

Can you say with 100% certainty that any phone hasn't been hacked? I sure can't.

I don't consider breaking into a phone with a weak password "hacking". Anyone can guess a password.

I'm talking bout genuine breaches as a result of insecure software from the app stores or system exploits. Does it happen? Sure, but it's so rare, I'll bet few people know anyone it's happened to.

The fact is, mainstream apps from trusted sources on phones are seldom the sources of the problems people have with their phones being breached. More often than not, it's the user that is at fault either because they fail to use the security available or download things from questionable sources.

Google maps is highly unlikely to a) cause you to get your phone hacked and b) even less likely to cause your car to get hacked.

I would submit Chrysler and UConnect are more likely to have a breach on their own than have one as a result of a phone app connecting to it - and they have.
