GC Love/Hate

2012 Grand Cherokee Overland, Black Forest Green with summit grill, chrome fog lamp inserts, adaptive cruise and so on...Okay...in no particular order....

Loving....!

Ventilated seats!
I laughed at this feature, but now we love it. On hot days it seems to make the whole start of the ride a lot more comfortable. I tend to turn it off after an hour or so, but it's a great luxury feature.

Smart-Auto High-beams!
Wow, I can't believe how well this works. I live in upstate NY and our roads are dark, windy and loaded with hills. The smart beams function so well I know just leave them on auto most of the time. They are not for lighted streets BTW, but use them where they're meant and perfect!

Hemi V8!
Yeah, okay, you V6 owners LOOK AWAY! My friend has a V6 Overland and he drove my new V8 version and he's trading! If you live where there are hills, do towing or lots of highway driving the Hemi is a huge upgrade for the feel of the GC. Kicking it down at 65 MPH brings on more power/speed than I expected and the Jeep is certainly capable of getting out of it's own way. If you're highway driving falls below 60% I'd stick with the V6.

Saddle Black interior!
Never fails to get ooh's & ahh's from people. The interior is a knockout.

Control Layout!
Better than ANY luxury SUV we tested with the exception of the X5, which we thought has a slightly nicer layout (but looked cheaper).

Adaptive Cruise!
Another feature I laughed at...wrong! The blind spot monitoring is unobtrusive and has already come in handy more than once. Like any safety feature it takes a small learning curve to make it count. The cruise control is AMAZING. Driving with a good amount of traffic the ADC is capable of safely handling throttle and will bring the car down to a near stop FAST. It's a little spooky and I will only use it for travel, but I'm impressed all the same. Adaptive cruise gets you better MPG than regular cruise.

Legroom!
I'm 6'3 and this GC really rocks when it comes to legroom! In fact the whole cabin is really sweet in that regard.

Air Lift/Quadra lift!
It's come in handy just once on a bad dirt road, but it's WAY cool!

Hating....!

VR Nav System!
Type into it and you're fine, works great. But good luck with HUGELY inaccurate voice recognition system. Even if the VR works you'll miss 3 exits by the time you get through the prompts. Getting lockpick is pretty much a requirement to get full functionality from the Nav system.

Panoramic Sunroof!
I have the dread rattle, left back corner. Not a big deal but they did not fix it on the 1st try. Their fix lasted two days. I also don't care for the thin sunshade, though I get that it's the only way given the size.

Single Stalk controls!
Yuk! There's too much going on in the single turn indicator. They really should have added a second stalk to spread out the controls for the wipers, which are a rubiks cube of settings.

Flipper Glass!
Really? Does anyone use this? I guess I don't hate it, but I'm not sure what the point is.

And there you have it!

The flipper glass is very useful when packing the jeep full of small packages, like when taking the family on vacation or taking the kids back to school. You can close the gate to keep the first layer in place and open the flip to put on or remove the second layer. I suppose if you never load up, you wouldn't appreciate the convenience. The opening is so small however, its not all that useful for routine use. The one on the WJ is used routinely.

Re: GC Love/Hate

I have to say that I really love the flipper glass. Very convenient to quickly throw in or retrieve small items without having to lift and close the whole tailgate (or wait for automatic opening/closing). It's also great when I'm parked in the garage and may not have the clearance to open the gate.

Re: GC Love/Hate

I agree 100% with MOST of what you said down to a T. I will say that I have no issues with the wiper stalk. I leave it on the rain sensing wiper settings and never have to touch it except for turn signal. If you ask me having another seperately stalk would be wayyyy more obtrusive than a single one with a few extra controls on it.

As for the flipper glass, I'm very surprised to see you don't see the point of it. Really? You never have opened the glass to load something small, or have something super long hang out the back? I had a extension ladder coming out the back, I even transported a 16' garage door panel in my jeep!!! Moving those items would not have been possible if it werent for the flipable glass. It's an excellent feature that I can't believe you've never used. Ahh well it's ok lol
Either way excellent review thanks for sharing!

WAY back, I had a dodge ramcharger that had a power window in the back. I wonder if jeep would ever bring that back? I remember that it was nice on hot summer days to be able to drive with it open - something we can't do with the flipper glass..

I've grown to love the flipper glass. At first I was like wtf am I going to use that for but now I use it a lot for convenience.

As said above if it was power and rolled into the hatch that would be great. I loved that on my old Bronco years ago being able to cruise with it down on nice days.

The flipper glass is one of the features that resulted in my initial interest in the new JGC.
BTW, Carmel is downstate NY, not upstate. (A long running NYS residental argument!)

Re: GC Love/Hate

I believe that with the flipper glass open or rolled down via any kind of electric version...could lead to DEATH via exhaust fumes while driving in some situations.

LOL! At nearly 1000 feet above sea level I consider myself "up" state!

When last year's pre-Halloween snowstorm left our Subaru and Outlander stranded.....along with our neighbor's new X5.....but my friend's Overland had NO trouble, I knew I'd be buying one.

Great looking GC!!!

------- I just have to ask, what year was your last vehicle??? Both of these features have been standard for like the last 20-30 years! LOL

Re: GC Love/Hate

I agree with others...I absolutely love the flipper glass option and wish my wife's crossover had it as it's very handy when having a lot of luggage to pack or when needing to haul something very long by hanging it out the back.

Trust me, once you have the flipper glass, you won't want to be w/o out.
