I'm wondering if the FCW should be doing more in these approaching collisions.

It's a great piece of tech.

Not sure why it doesn't do more to minimize forward collisions.

Damn. I would rather have not seen that story.

But it will take a lot more than FCW to stop a drunk moron from blowing through an intersection at 80 mph.

The simple answer is that too many folks drive too fast for conditions and in this case, it was a sudden, complete white out on a slippery highway...FCW probably would have fired off no problem, but some situations are what they are. Remember, the range isn't incredibly far.

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

I was driving during a recent ice/snow storm on a main road, 45 mph speed limit with multiple lanes. There wasn't much snow on the section I was driving on, but a vehicle was approaching behind me going 50 or so while I was going 35. He didn't see the unplowed section in front of me and was approaching quick (and I wanted to slow down to 20).

I honked my horn, but the driver accelerated even more in response. I couldn't slow down in fear that I would be rear ended. Long story short, I hit the snow, but maintained control, but the other driver lost control and spun out into opposing traffic (luckily no cars were coming from that direction).

at my age, I thought I was supposed to be the one with the mentality that I'm invincible. I don't drive unless I need to in such conditions, mostly because of situations like this.

It was him and 2 friends of his going to a hunting show in PA. He said he stopped. Then all of a sudden a semi slammed into the back of his Ram and next thing he remembered was waking up at it was all white. The all white was the airbags. His friend in the front seat hurt his neck and one in the bag was thrown from the vehicle and killed.

My friend was released from the hospital 6 hours later.

Dude was damn lucky that he was able to walk away.

Condolences to the families affected by this horrible tragedy.

Say what you want about Mopar and their quality, but these are safe vehicles.
That black Ram pick up is my very good friend, he was the driver. Lucky to be alive but his other buddy did pass away. Very sad tragedy.

That's the biggest case you can make for wearing seat belts, even in the back seat.

Too many people only wear them in the front seats.

It's the same with airplanes: survivability often depends on not being knocked around the cabin so you can be in good enough condition to hopefully walk away.
