I think I spied more than one JGC in that pile in the various photos of the terrible accident. Regardless of what folks were driving, this is a tragic event.

What in the world happened there? Looks like everyone decided to just drive into and form a big pile in middle of the highway.

My guess...

Someone got on their brakes or tried to lane change and lost control. Chain reaction result of too many people driving too fast and too close together on a slippery road.

Terrible crash. But what if the WK2 had some better tires than Fortera's?

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

The reports are saying that there was a complete white out for a bit. Everyone was doing 60-70mph and suddenly visibility went down to 0. Some people slammed on the brakes, some drifted off the road, some just continued forward. The result is what you see here.

That's terrible. I wonder if they'll total that Grand Cherokee. Probably not though.

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

Yes, a sudden snow squall with zero visibility. I'm sure that folks driving too fast for the conditions also contributed...

No tires in the world are going to save you from a sudden whiteout. However I would like to have an official accident disclaimer from FCA when filing with the insurance that "Goodyear Forteras are not responsible for any accidents incurred during the lifetime of this vehicle"

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

Greetings,

Even when you do not have white out conditions on I-78 in PA, the morning fog is also very dangerous in those valleys. The only thing that will help to judge the proper distance between vehicles will be an IR or Radar system displayed on the headunit.

Best for now.

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

A friend of mine was involved in that accident. He was driving a Dodge Ram (whats left of it is pictured here)

It was him and 2 friends of his going to a hunting show in PA. He said he stopped. Then all of a sudden a semi slammed into the back of his Ram and next thing he remembered was waking up at it was all white. The all white was the airbags. His friend in the front seat hurt his neck and one in the bag was thrown from the vehicle and killed.

My friend was released from the hospital 6 hours later.

Dude was damn lucky that he was able to walk away.

Condolences to the families affected by this horrible tragedy.

Say what you want about Mopar and their quality, but these are safe vehicles.

Re: GC takes it on the chin in tragic pile up in PA

Very very sorry to learn about that. I have been in lake effect squalls. You are driving along under cloudless skies at the speed limit and in a split second you can not see the front of your hood. Your life flashes through you mind. Horrible experience.
