Re: GC vs Land Cruiser vs Range Rover

One solution for them is to look at what Hyundai is doing with the Equus.

Instead of spending a bunch of money, or making dealership franchisees spend a lot of money, to provide an atmosphere that $60k+ buyers will find comparable to what they'd get at Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, etc they are keeping those buyers out of the dealership. They bring demos to their work or home for them to drive. Deliver cars and do paperwork in the customer's work or home.

For service, all service is included a'la BMW, and they pick up and deliver an Equus loaner for all service. That way the Equus can be serviced at the Hyundai dealer next to an Elantra but the customer is not smacked in the face by it.

So far, its working. Equus owner satisfaction is some of the highest in the segment. Pick up and drop off is something that when we got our first Lexus in 1998 every Lexus dealer did...now most of them no longer do.

The challenge for Jeep will be providing a dealer network that will stand up to a luxury car experience while still sharing dealers with Chrysler, Dodge & Ram. Maybe this is a solution for upper end Jeeps.

He says while laughing to himself because he already knows details about the next JGC.

I have no problem with them moving the JGC further upmarket, but I still want to get a great value. Right now, the JGC (in Overland, Summit, and SRT trims) is comparable to vehicles costing $15-20K more, and I want that to hold true if they move it upmarket.

... I dunno, is LR still considered british enough that Oolong tea would be more obligatory?

Definitely a few dealers would need to be dropped by the road side, sorta like Porsche used to do when they still cared about customers other than as wallets.

That is gonna be tough to maintain.
I cross shopped the RR and came really close, but for the extra price, it just wasn't worth that much more than the GC.

Just to nose it and wave my ignorance flag...but why is the conversation always about the RR, but the LR4 is never mentioned?

Of course that improving quality and improving the assembly process is key. Not just to moving upwards in the market, but also to improving profitability.
Quality saves you money! Our company works in the semiconductors industry and as part of improving profitability we always improve quality for our clients manufacturing sites.

And just copying RR is not enough, Jeep needs to get some creativity that is pure Jeep into the mix, example: work done on lower 40.

Have some Long arm suspensions as factory options, allow people to choose the stitches color on the seats, etc.

The value of real customization is that you are selling the product before starting, which is good for both jeep and the dealers.

So my point if you copy RR you will be criticized on the points that are RR strength, where as if you innovate RR will be judged based on your strengths.

And I'll take some bourbon or southern comfort over tea please........

When I started this thread, I had been checking out the RRs and the LCs, and just was wondering if those ever entered any of our thought processes when considering the GC.

For me, and this is just my opinion---to be taken lightly LOL, though the LR4 is a closer price comparison, the LR4 is so ugly, I thought AMC had been resurrected to build it!!

What would you have in mind for a more "premium" service?

When my wife had a Lexus, we'd go to the dealership, and they had great cookies, and Starbucks coffee, along with a kid's playroom, and an internet work room......but the oil change was $200!!!

As for atmosphere, the local Rolls/Bentley dealership shares space with the BMW dealership. Those Grey Pouponers probably hate having to sift through the Beemers to get to their Phantoms and Ghosts!!

First of all skip the hard sell. No premium dealer I have visited has asked me what it would take for me to buy a car today. Secondly, have a decent fleet of loaners. The BMW dealer has BMW loaners (only 3 series but still a new BMW). My friends Porsche dealer sometimes gives him. A panamera when he drops off his Cayenne.

I will say that the Greenwich, CT dealer was not that pushy. However, their stock was mostly at the lower end of the range. Not a single Summit or Overland on the lot and not a single Limited with a Hemi. I guess the good people of Greenwich are sticking to their Range Rovers,, Porsches and BMWs. They are probably buying the Jeeps for their nannies though.

The X5 is apparently so common in that town when I took my car to the hand car wash next to the Jeep dealer, another customer did a double take because he had already seen his identical car go though. I asked him if he had got the (very expensive extended warranty), he said yes fortunately he had because his car had suffered a transmission failure which cost $7000 to repair.
