Gear whine in 4WD Low normal?

I got my WK2, Overland, Hemi, Off-Road II two months ago, and I've used 4WD Low about three times. Every time, I've had the radio on, until this afternoon.

I was descending a fairly long, steep, bumpy dirt road, and I didn't want to ride the brakes the whole way. Keeping the transmission in first gear didn't help, there still was not enough engine braking - so I shifted into 4WD Low to take advantage of the lower gearing.

I noticed a fairly loud mechanical whining/whirring noise, which I assume to be gear noise or something, with 4WD Low engaged. Of course, this got louder the faster I went.

It was not obtrusively loud, nor did it sound particularly bad - but it was certainly audible.

Is this normal?

Re: Gear whine in 4WD Low normal?

When I have a Pathfinder SE, when it was in 4 Low, it does make that sound.

And in 4 Low you're not suppose to drive fast brosef...

By faster, I meant close to 25 mph.

Re: Gear whine in 4WD Low normal?

Yes it's normal, most Jeeps have a 2:72-1 reduction in low range. I have a doubler in my JK so I'm at 7:4-1 and it's real noticable. I'm surprised with all the insulation in the GC that you'd hear anything.
