Going Home on Nav

Although not new to Nav Systems, the "Home" feature on 730 radion in my 2012 GC is. Since getting the Jeep this feature has been very useful when traveling...of course on return trips, especially to see what the arrival time back home will be.

However, I was talking with someone at work that just bought a Toyota Highlander and that their dealer told them never to program your actual home address into the Nav system. The reason being that if stolen, the theif could go directly to your home and have the garage door opener to ease their access as well.

I guess I never really though about that but it does make sense. The suggestion is to program a nearby location, say a mile or so, and a common location such as a Walgreens, Post Office, etc.

How many others have done this? Am I being too paranoid about having my home address in the system?

Re: Going Home on Nav

Since you know where home is when you get closer, put the nearest police station address for whoever wants to check out your home

Re: Going Home on Nav

I've thought about that, but the thieves could just as easily look in the glovebox and get that information from my registration or insurance card.

Mine is programed with "HOME" at the entrance to our subdivision, over a mile away - this is more to deter the DBs who will record the addy of your home with out thinking about the registration in the glove box.

Re: Going Home on Nav

If he steals my rig it would be nice if he at least drove it home for me. My wife, son or neighbor will meet him at the door with a loaded firearm to accept the keys as well as his apology.

Re: Going Home on Nav

every other car I've owned has had a 4 digit code you have to enter to get to the "go home" feature.......the Jeep does not.

Re: Going Home on Nav

I've never thought of this till I saw this thread. I wonder if the new system will have a pin to access the home feature.

Re: Going Home on Nav

I have home set as the street parallel with mine. The only annoyance is when I get home, I have to "stop routing" because once I start it up again, it will try to get me to turn around and go to that other street lol. Minor problem for piece of mind.

Jeep didn't include the PIN feature but they included a handy feature that periodically erases your home address, forcing you to reenter it. Anyone notice this????

I put in my home address the day I bought it and even did a software update and never had a problem.....I call user error.

If the new system does have the PIN option, you will most likely need to put the vehicle in park with the e-brake on in order to enter it.

Re: Going Home on Nav

I'm not too concerned about someone stealing my vehicle and returning to my home (with the stolen vehicle) in order to gain access to my garage.

If my jeep is stolen and I become overly paranoid, I'll simply change the code for the door opener.
