We did Euro Delivery on my wife's 335D (425 lb/ft of diesel torque!) and are currently awaiting stateside redelivery so I'm reading bimmerfest regularly. There's a current thread on the 3 forum that says BMW (auto) trannies are sealed and can't be maintained. You're supposed to run the tranny until it breaks, then spend $8K to replace it.

The tranny and diff are sealed but a pump can be used at the fill hole. Not ideal but it can be done. Go to an Indy shop.

The 335D is a great car. Stump pulling torque while providing fuel economy in the 30's. Did you receive the Eco credit?

I went through the same evaluation and would've preferred the X5 (either 35D or 50i). In the end the value proposition of the JGC Overland won. Time will tell if it was the right choice. For now I am happy with my decision.

We did get eco credit and ED pricing on the 335D, I'm not sure we would have bought without.

I'm a Jeep man myself, never even considered an X car over a Grand Cherokee. I had an X3 as a loaner once and wasn't impressed - you can't toss the X around like you can a 3 sedan (or coupe) - it just seemed like yet another SUV. Why pay the extra money in purchase and maintenance costs just to have the BMW nameplate?

(Properly equipped) BMW sedans on the other hand have that great balance between drivability, comfort and luxury.

Re: Good Bye Jeep, hello BMW

I haven't driven an X3 (older model or new design) but the X5 is very nimble considering the mass. With Adaptive Drive it puts it in the 3-series w/ sport pkg level of handling. Very surprising for a SUV (err SAV in BMW speak).

To be fair the Jeep is slated more toward off-road capabilities vs. on-road performance. Therefore I wouldn't expect it (non-SRT) to have the same driving dynamics.

Good luck with 335D. Great car and a lot of ways better vs. the 335i.

Regards,
NHman

I always love hearing...."This car has Free maintenance, blah blah blah" Well just like the warranty, you are just paying for it all upfront, but if it gives you a warm fuzzy, you can look at it that way if you want.

I hope I didn't cool your fuzzy.

Nothing's free, just included with your purchase...

That said, on my other car (Volvo S40) I've really liked having the 5 year/60,000 mile maintenance and wear and tear coverage so far. Only thing I've had to pay for in 37K miles has been one extra oil change and one tire balance and rotation.

Re: Good Bye Jeep, hello BMW

Sorry to hear about your problems. My '93 Grand Cherokee (1st year of 1st generation) was so awesome I finally departed with it for the 2011. No problems with the new Grand Cherokee either. Good luck with the BMW.
