good price?

I know there are a million threads on this, so I apologize. I did try to search, but at this point there are so many things to sift through...I'm just going to ask.

Visited my parents last night & my dad tells me that he decided he's buying a new vehicle - a Grand Cherokee. He looked at it last week at a local dealership, liked it a lot, started to talk numbers, but then mom slowed him down a bit. In this instance, I think that was good.

He's looking at a 2014 Limited (Deep Cherry) that appears to only have the tow package as an option. I'm going with him tomorrow night to look at it, so I'm going off the dealer's site only at this point. Based on the 2014 pricing thread, invoice is $36192 and $708 for the tow package, so $36900 total. The have it listed for $37-something, but told him they'd do basically $35200. If I'm looking at this correctly, it seems that this is about 4% under invoice & a pretty good price. This is supposed to be a "no haggle" dealership, but that begs the question..why was it listed at $37?

Here's the snag - they are SCREWING him on his trade in. My dad doesn't drive much, so his 2006 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Laramie (basically loaded vehicle) has 27,000 miles. They offered him $13,000. KBB is showing the lowest value, in rough condition, at about $18,000. I'm having a hard time reconciling a very good price on the vehicle but at the same time a terrible price on the trade in. If they're going to try to take advantage of him (which I think they are) why not do it on the purchase too? I guess it's making me question whether I'm missing something on the price they extended to him, that maybe it's not as good as it seems.

edit - just to clarify, the prices I looked at on KBB were for trade in, not retail. His vehicle has a little damage to the upholstery on the drivers door panel (their puppy decided to chew on it) but is otherwise in perfect shape.

Re: good price?

Just relying on the numbers you gave, I'd have to agree they're screwing him on the trade in offer - which is where they're planning to make their money off him. And, again relying on your numbers only, their offer on the new Limited is indeed a very good one. His options are:

1.) Buy the '14 at their offered price and try to sell his current vehicle to a different dealership; to Carmax (if there's one near hime); or sell it privately.
2.) Get an offer from one of the other sources listed above and use that as leverage to get a better trade in from the dealer he's currently working with.
3.) Take his business to a different dealer; i.e. one that won't play games on either the trade in or new vehicle price.

You didn't say where your dad lives, but members on this forum have purchased '14 GCs from dealers in Denver, Houston, and Washington, D.C. (just to name a few cities) and had great experiences doing so. Good dealerships are out there, sometimes you have to hunt for them. Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: good price?

We're in WI - Green Bay, specifically. There are probably 5 jeep dealerships within 30 miles or so, and quite a few more if we go toward Milwaukee (about a 2 hour drive). I told him basically the same thing as your point #3 - there are enough other options in this area that there's no point in even dealing with a dealer that's going to play games. He's not in a huge rush, so basically I'll "advise" and make sure he takes his time & gets a good deal.

I know that they were showing him a '13 & a '14 so I'm hoping he didn't confuse his numbers on what he told me. He said they were pushing him to the '13, that it was "just as good", so there's another "game" I guess - trying to clear out their old stock..

Thanks for the reply, I'll make sure to post when he does get it..

Jerky lips... I had a group buy for Wisconsin and the dealer I went with was still doing 4% under invoice on in-stock or orders. My guess is your talking about Ganrud on the east side of GB. They say they don't haggle but they will if you push them. Chrysler World did 4.5% and Kolosso did 5% when I contacted them. Message me if you want some help on this but I would honestly stay away from Ganrud.

Bergstrom in Kaukauna would only do 1% under invoice when I was working numbers back in Jan/Feb. I emailed almost all the dealers around the state when I was looking.

Update!

I found another dealer that was outstanding to work with and came to a deal for my dad this morning. He got a Limited with 20" wheels, tow package, & RA4 for $2150 under invoice anf they gave him a very fair price for his trade.

Thanks to everyone here for the help. Special thanks to Snofire!!

Also thanks & a shout-out to Sheboygan Auto for being awesome. My dad has bought a lot of cars over the years and said this morning, "I've never had an experience like this - they were so easy to work with".

Excellent!

Now tell him he needs to get on here and join the fun.

Here in NY, selling outright is not always a good way to go as the sales taxes have to be factored in (i.e., buy a $40,000 vehicle and trade in a $20,000 vehicle, then pay sales tax of $1700 on the difference; the same deal as an outright purchase would add $1700 to the purchase price in sales tax... maybe still better than trading). Also to be considered is the time and money spent on detailing, advertising, showing, etc. Decisions, decisions...

Update... Dealer called last night to say his vehicle is in, going to pick it up on Friday.

Woo hoo!

The only disappointing thing is that they weren't able to do a tire swap. The dealer said they'd try to do it, but told me that the tire vendors they normally deal with weren't willing to do it this time. Fartera's it is, I guess..

Re: good price?

In cars, as in real estate, the sales model is based on the fact that most people don't know when to walk away.

When you can come up with a deal that is good for all involved, and not bad for any involved, the world becomes a slightly better place.

When one side or the other "makes a killing" the world becomes a slightly worse place.

And yes, what goes around comes around. Just MHO.

Re: good price?

That's what they ALWAYS do on trade ins. Make your best deal with NO Trade In. Then ask them what you'll get. You will almost always get peanuts. They will give you wholesale price.

They will either give you a great price on trade in and screw you on new or vica versa. They will rarely give you a great deal on both.

If you want the best deal, sell it on your own. I just sold my old Jeep Grand in less than 12 hours (craigs list). Probably got $2k more than if I traded it.

Tell them no trade in and see if they stick to that deal, which does look pretty good.

To the recent reply-ers.... (?)..this was an oldish post. The dealership we bought from gave a really good price AND gave a very fair trade in value. No complaints on that front. The other dealerships we went to earlier were the bad experiences.

The only "issue" was that after the deal was done I asked about swapping tires. He said they'd try to make it work but weren't able to.
