Our VW 04 Touareg was totaled due to water damaged, and picked up a 2012 Limited 4X4 V6 Lux Pkg II 730n. I hope it's more reliable, although i liked driving the Treg, i did not enjoy it's issues!
I sold both an SLK230 and 325i to make room for the JGC Overland V8. Over the first 20,000 miles, I've had fewer problems and warranty repairs than either of those two. Otherwise comparisons are like comparing apples to oranges to peaches Note the issues were relatively minor but Mercedes could not come up with a fix for one where the front tire wore unevenly and refused to deal with another where the auto trans was noisy when cold.
Repairs seem to be more economical outside the warranty as well as less expensive parts! I like that! No more expensive services and ability to do your own work! Last time I owned a Jeep was a 95 Wrangler, Rio Grande Edition with a 3inch suspension lift, 33inch mickey thompsons, she was pretty, not practical when the family started expanding.
You'll be surprised to know that the 2011+ Grand Cherokee has a lot of German in it. The WK2 was built on the same platform as the Mercedes M class and shares a lot of technology with Mercedes.

Can I ask how you total a Toureg due to water damage?
I ask because my BIL totalled his Kia just by launching his boat, and didn't realize all the computers were in the floorboard (ie under seat, etc) and got soaked and toasted. Kia was only 6 months old.
The sunroof and roof rail panels had a slow leak that water was accumulating inside the car's inner walls, started to grow mold and smell. 9000K worth of repair.
Traded our '09 X6 for a '12 GC Overland. Wife shook her head at first (she is a huge BMW fan), but after her first drive she was hooked. We love our new Jeep.
