Re: Got Smartbeam?

I have it, and it took me a week to figure out how it worked.
For instance:
Yeah, the speed has been mentioned. For us in Canada it shuts turns on at about 40 kmh, and turns off at around 30 kmh.
Then there is the reflection factor. I've found that sometimes when rounding bends on secondary roads that have a ton of reflectors, that they will shut it off.
Same with lots of streetlights.
Same with intersections with flashing RED LED lights. I have several intersections that I pass through on the way home.
The flashing LED stop lights are very bright, and shut off the highbeams several kilometers away.
So its things like this that made me question the value of this feature.
But after a while, i learned to like it, and got over the few quirks.

The sensitivity of the system is all done in the firmware, so I have no doubt that as they develop this system, over time, it will only get better.

Possibly the camera on the back of the back of the rear view mirror needs to be realigned. In both the 2011 and 2012 manuals they talk about camera alignment/ realignment. They don't tell ya how to do it.

@ AAAA - The same exact statement is in the 2011 Owner Manual. I have version 5 of the 2011 manual and it's on Page 150. On the right hand side under the activate section. "NOTE: This system will not activate until the vehicle is at or above 20 mph (32 km/h)."

Thanks bbjrhome. My manual in the vehicle does state that, but on page 149. The manual I refer to in the house is an early pdf and it does not state it.

Re: Got Smartbeam?

Speaking of headlamps, quick question regarding the Overland headlights. I am familiar with how smart beam works as I had a 2005 limited that had it and I was very impressed with how well it worked. My question is about the low beam HID projectors. I thought I remember them always being advertised as Bi-xenon, but is that really the case?
After reading more about the new Jeeps I assume the HID projectors are ONLY low beams, and the halogen high beams do the rest. For example, my 2007 Acura TL-S is true Bi-Xenon where the same projector that does low beam turns into high beam as well by lowering the cutoff shield inside the projector.
So does the new Overland have a bi-xenon setup in addition to the smart beam halogen high beams?

Thanks,
James

Yes, the Overland does have the bi-xenon setup.
My previous vehicle had the other system you mentionned - only low-beam Xenon, and the high beams were Halogen.
I like this system better.

So basically what your saying is that the new Jeep essentially has dual high beams? Meaning that the HID projectors are bi-xenon, and it has halogen high beams as well? Dang, that must be some pretty serious high beam output!!

no there is no halogen high beam. The HID projector has a shutter in it that controls light output. The halogen bulb in the headlight unit is strictly the DRL on vehicles equipped with HID's

Interesting, so unlike the WK1 that varied the intensity of the highbeam halogen bulb, the WK2 with HID's varies the shutter in the projector to vary light output?

Re: Got Smartbeam?

Question about the smart beams. I used it for a while when I first got the jgc, then turned it off, I thought. If I remember right even with smart beam there is a high beam indicator on the dash. Is there any time the high beams could be on and the indicator not light up? I keep getting flashed, but as far as I know the high beams aren't on. I do have the light switch on auto. Guess its possible the headlights aren't adjusted correctly? I just don't want to be the a**hole that blinds everyone on the road.

Re: Got Smartbeam?

The indicator will light up whenever the high beams are on. Your low beams may be out of alignment, but probably not. Many drivers are not used to seeing HIDs coming at them and remember they are higher off the ground on an SUV than sedan.

Doesn't the Overland have the self-leveling lights? I know my Ltd does.

It does, and I wondered if that could be the problem, if that feature wasn't working properly? I was flashed again this morning (flashed back this time) and I know my brights were not on.
