Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Hi All, really hoping someone can advise me a little on here, our jeep is at 25000 miles and Chrysler are saying that the one passenger side rotor is seized and at 10% rest of the brakes are 65% seems a little odd why the one would be so bad, mechanic told my wife that it must be sitting for a long period of time for this to happen, strange when she uses it everyday to go to work
I called the dealer i bought it from and he was going to see if they would repair this as they are asking $930.00 + tax to change it out

Any suggestions on where to go with this

Many thanks

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

I think what they are referring to is the caliper seized. Rotor cannot seize as they are the moving part. Calipers should be part of the 3/36 warranty and no cost to you including the brake pads as they were worn due to malfunctioning warrantied part. That being said you probably want to replace the pads and rotor on same axle as this one so that the pads are equal on both sides. .

Hey guys, called Chrysler yesterday and explained the situation, they have the Jeep booked in (again) next week and said they will change the rotor and the calliper at no cost as a good will offer!!!

will be interesting to see why that one brake has already seized!

Translation: they thought they could charge you for something covered by the warranty. When you called them on it, they decided to act like they were doing you a favor so you wouldn't bad mouth them on the internet.

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

A seized caliper can happen now and then.

I'd ask to do pads and rotor on the other side even if it's out of your pocket (shouldn't be that much). You want everything roughly the same age and wear on both sides. Kind of like tires. Not absolutely critical but in the end it won't cost you because the other side will wear out 25K miles sooner than the seized side that's being replaced if you don't.

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Thanks guys!
They got back to me and the Jeep went in today, they said they would replace both back callipers and rotor's as a good will gesture, now they are telling me the front rotors need to be sanded down as there is still a vibration when braking. They want $220 +tax to do this
Jeep is 9 months old 23000 miles, should I be paying to have this done or should this be covered by the garage as the initial fault was a car problem not milage. I know im over my 20000 miles warranty but surely this shouldn't be happening on a new vehicle!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thank You

20,000 mile warranty?

I'd tell this dealer to stop jerking you around and file a complaint with a CSR.

I find folks rarely turn rotors these days. That price is pushing what new rotors and pads would cost.

Hard to say if they should be done or not. It is possible.

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

20,000 mile warranty? For a new Jeep, I was only aware of the 12,000 mile/1 year "everything" warranty, the 36,000 mile/3 year "bumper-to-bumper" warranty, and the 100,000 mile/5 year powertrain warranty. Was it bought used? Did I miss a change?

I'd ask them what caused the rotors to need turning. If they don't give you an adequate answer, politely/kindly advise them that you think the rears having issues caused this problem, and that you shouldn't have to pay for the fronts as the warrantied-issue is what caused this new one. Remind them that this vehicle is still pretty new, and shouldn't need new rotors/pads or rotors turned on any of the wheels, let alone all four needing work.

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

I should also mention warped rotors (i. e. ones that cause vibration) should not be turned (sanded), they should be replaced.

It is possible for rotors to warp, pretty much any time.
Your driving habits can impact things a lot.
So it's tough to argue the front was defective or premature due to rear failing.

Since you are getting all new brakes in the rear I wouldn't argue a modest cost on the front.
But I would demand new rotors if they are vibrating.

Re: Grand Cherokee 2014 Limited

Warped rotors are often caused by rapid thermal changes, or leaving the brake pads applied to the rotors after excessive duty (such as on a road circuit). They must be replaced and can't be turned/machined flat; otherwise the next heat cycle will rewarp them.
