Grand Cherokee Altitude Your thoughts?

Hello All,

Since the beginning of the year I have been obsessing over the new 2014 cherokee. The Trail Hawk Model in particular, due to its rugged looks and capability. I have been a member of 2014 Jeep Cherokee Forums for a few months now. I recently had the opportunity to see a nicely equipped GC altitude sitting next to a Cherokee sport. Though the cherokee wasnt the TH model my perspective was changed a bit.

I read alot of post about problems with the 9 speed transmission, which also swayed my decision a bit. I have come on this forum to learn as much as I can about the grand cherokee, particularly the altitude mode as i think the procing hits that sweet spot.

Has anyone driven it off road? how capable is it. Can it be ordered with a Camera built in for those willing to pay ?

Thanks in advance.

Offroad capability? LOL... yes, it's a Jeep.

The Parkview rear backup camera (XAC) is available as a factory option on the Altitude for 2015. It's not available on the 2014. (Note: I corrected this statement in a post below)

Note: The backup camera also requires the 9 amplified speakers and subwoofer package (RC3).

Don't limit yourself to just the "Altitude" special edition trim...but that's a great starting point. Select the trim level that gives you the best mix of the features and options "you" need to make "you" happy for the given price.

And even the top-of-the-line Summit is quite adept at "off-road". JGC was built for that, even when it has a pretty face on it.

Re: Grand Cherokee Altitude Your thoughts?

My local Jeep dealer is making a dealer trade for me on a 2014 Altitude with factory installed back up camera. You cannot add it as an option on Jeep.com but some dealers are beginning to take delivery of '14 models with that option. They also have the up graded speakers. Very hard to find at this point though. I'm getting a granite crystal which should be here in about a week since it is being trailered in. We are so excited. Drove one for two days but it didn't have the backup camera. Of course we are not getting an excellent deal since it is a dealer trade and they are selling like hot cakes in my neck of the woods (east Tennesse). We probably could get a better deal if we wait and order one but I don't want to wait that long.

Re: Grand Cherokee Altitude Your thoughts?

I see that some others on the forum are reporting that the XAC and RC3 options above have started showing up on late production 2014 Altitudes. Check the window sticker or have the dealer check the build sheet of any incoming stock if you're considering one.

I have just over 5K on my 14' Altitude since purchased this past April. The vehicle is amazing and the trim level was exactly my style (minus not having the ParkView backup camera). Make sure you choose the vehicle trim based on your very own needs/wants. There are many configurable options with the JGC and even then you typically can find one configured to your liking on the dealer lot.

My off road experience has been in some sand (tires aired down) and also a bumpy/muddy area behind my home where they have torn down the trees in lieu of new home construction. It drove flawlessly. One thing to keep in mind is how much off road you plan to do and what type of terrain it will be. Some of the upper trim packages include the more advanced off road capability (4-Lo) and features.

Like mentioned above, the Rear ParkView camera can be obtained now on late 14' MY Altitudes and it comes with the 9 speaker premium upgrade as well. I believe this adds about $890 or more to the previous cost of the Altitude. I have a couple dealers around me that have the vehicle on the lot. The sticker price will show $39,475 which is how I searched online at my local dealers. Package 23Z should be in the description to ensure it's a Altitude package.

Good luck with your hunt for your new Jeep. Regardless of your decision you will be extremely happy.

Re: Grand Cherokee Altitude Your thoughts?

Your title line says Grand Cherokee, but your question seems to be about Cherokee.

The OP is specifically asking about the JGC Altitude...note the mention of them side-by-side at the dealer.

Re: Grand Cherokee Altitude Your thoughts?

Here is my similar situation. Currently in a '12 wk2 LaredoX v8 and my lease is up in several months. Having a hard time deciding between a Cherokee TrailHawk V6 or a GC Altitude.

I was shocked at how nice the Trailhawk was inside, seats are more comfortable than GC and i do love the look of the TH. However, the GC has substantially more cargo room/towing ability and has a lot of upgrades compared to my '12....the Altitudes look sharp as hell too. Gas mileage would be similar with slight advantage to the TH (either would be big improvement from my current Hemi's mpg, i just rarely/never utilize all of the power).

Anyone have extended first hand experience with both? I know a decision like this is mostly personal preference.. but any insight would be helpful..thanks

Thank you, and that is quite a gorgeous pic of your Jepp by the way.

As for your earlier post. The reason I am starting at the Altitude and building from there is that the Jeeps get quite expensive from the limited on up.

Those seats are great in the trail hawk but not far off from the Altitude I sat in. I fell in love behind the wheel. The alcantara seats are more comfy than the new leather. That probably changes when broken in but the GC summit I sat in was a little sturdy. Still id get a summit if I could afford one. The altitude is more in my price range, since i am being fiscally responsible. Ahem. lol
