"Grand Cherokee" door lettering

In the next few days, I plan to remove the chrome door molding and add the "Grand Cherokee" lettering. Removing the molding is pretty straight forward but is there a technique to adding the lettering straight?

Re: "Grand Cherokee" door lettering

I personally use painters tape and use it as a base line. I make sure it is levelled and aligned to where I want the bottom part of what I am sticking.. That has always worked for me. Take your time and measures, all should be fine!

I agree. My other piece of advice, get an eraser wheel. The glue for me was a pain to get off even after heating it up.

Just had to Google "eraser wheel"...this won't damage the paint? Goo Gone isn't enough?

Try a detailing forum, I had some paint questions and someone here had referred me to them...I was very well answered by all the information found, seriously, well worth the read! try Autogeekonline in google, it will send you directly to their forum...

If you keep the wheel in one spot, yes it will. Think of it like ironing a shirt. Always have it moving and don't apply too much pressure. I tried goo gone and at least for me, it didn't help all that much. My finger tips hurt for a good week.

Re: "Grand Cherokee" door lettering

I just used my fingers and goo gone and although painful it was worth it in the end.

Regarding the lettering my suggestion is to measure, measure, and then remeasure to ensure it is the spot you want. Like others suggest tape is great, but also have a buddy for another set of eyes to ensure it is straight.

Good luck!

Yeah +1 with the buddy method!

Re: "Grand Cherokee" door lettering

A heat gun and goo gone did it for me, with no effort at all.

I heated up the area, always keeping the heat gun moving to avoid messing up the paint. I then took off the big parts by just peeling it off. Afterwards, I soaked up the area with goo gone, letting it sit for a couple mins. Then, I just wiped it all away with a paper towel.

Re: "Grand Cherokee" door lettering

I have heard using an eraser wheel causes scratches. That's what a really good body shop owner told me.

Don't use goo gone; it doesn't help much and makes a mess. It actually makes it harder.

Heat it up with a heat gun, or in the sun if it's a warm day (this is what I did), and then just use your thumb or fingers. It helps to use quick motions and get it so the glue peels back on itself. Gloves would be very helpful or you'll get blisters for sure.

No heat gun, but a blow dryer should do. Wouldn't dental floss help too?

Re: "Grand Cherokee" door lettering

After the 3M tape has been peeled off try some WD-40 to remove the left over glue & goop.
