Grand Cherokee goes airborne

Hopefully it is okay to post a youtube link.

The video of a Jeep Grand Cherokee striking a car transport trailer and going airborne during a north-central Kansas crash is making the rounds on the Internet.
The driver, a 41-year-old Manhattan, Kan., man, was injured in the crash about 9:05 a.m. Tuesday along westbound Interstate 70 about 8 miles east of the Manhattan exit. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, according to Trooper Ben Gardner, a spokesman for the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The video shows the driver drifting to the right shoulder of I-70 and running up the back of the trailer, which hitched to a Ford F-350 parked alongside the highway. Nobody was in the truck, according to a preliminary crash report.
The SUV flew into the air, flipped and crashed onto its side near the ditch on the right side of the road.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to a hospital, according to the crash report.
Before the crash, a witness called 911 to report a person was driving erratically and was all over the highway, Gardner said. The witness shot the video to show how bad the driving was.
The was posted to YouTube. Gardner later sent a message via Twitter with links to the video and the crash report.
The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and looking into whether alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

Re: Grand Cherokee goes airborne

It's a known fact that people have a tendency to unconsciously steer towards what they're looking at alongside the highway.

Wow. It was the bug to the flame effect, but probably alcohol/medical.

Re: Grand Cherokee goes airborne

No explanation as to why the truck and trailer was on the side of the road? It's almost like it was staged somehow considering he seemed to hit the ramp pretty much straight on.

Just sayin.........

EDIT: I reckon he was trying to jump the Jeep over the truck.......................

Re: Grand Cherokee goes airborne

I would never do it, but whenever I see one of those trailers with the ramps parked by the side of the road I have a strong urge to drive up it.

That does seem strange and the Jeep looked like it was moving pretty quickly. One thing, reminds me if you ever have issues or pull over to help someone always pull as far away from the road as possible. With texting and other distractions so many people get killed.

I am not sure even a TSB reflash will get that rattle out of the truck...

Re: Grand Cherokee goes airborne

Looks like distracted driver. Perhaps had regular cruise control on, was doing something on his phone and was just half watching the vehicle in front that he was follow and didn't realize it pulled onto the shoulder and stopped. No break lights. Certainly this was not intentional...

Ayup, and if the thing alongside the highway has all sorts of flashing lights, "impaired" drivers are even more likely to run into it. Or at least thats the highway patrol folklore.

The news reports here did note though that the reason the video existed is the witness had observed the driver being erratic before the launch.

Whether due to legal/illegal drugs/alcohol or just driver nodding off due to the incredible boringness of I-70 across the flatlands remains to be seen.
