"The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently released the most stolen crossovers and SUVs from January 1, 2010 through December 31, 2013. The research only considered 2011-2013 model year vehicles that were stolen within those three years, which were a total of 21,711 crossovers and SUVs. In terms of market segments, compact crossovers were the most frequently stolen with 6,981 thefts while the pickup class of SUVs were the least stolen with 53 units."

Absolute numbers are a fairly crappy way of looking at this. Using this methodology, I suspect the numbers will strongly correlate to number of units sold/on the road. I think the question people are asking is "what cars are more LIKELY to get stolen" or in other words, what cars have the highest percentage stolen.
like wheels and tires...hmmm surprised they just didn't steal the whole thing when they took the wheels. left the brand spanking new brakes (r1 slotted) and the stereo there.
I need to try harder I guess so they can take the whole thing!
The article says the Ford Exploder has the best in class 350 lb-ft of torque. I guess the WK2 isn't in same class since the 5.7 Hemi and ecodiesel have more torque.
This will sound like a dumb question but I will go ahead and ask it anyway:
How are they stolen? They are not supposed to start without key fob present and I haven't heard any news about key fob protocol being easy to circumvent.
Do you think they were all towed away? I find it hard to believe.
Do thieves clone key fobs via dealer? Doesn't seem plausible enough in any significant numbers.

These cars can be started with the new technology thieves have available to them. There was a news video a while back where they showed how just walking through a parking lot you could open and start car after car.
As for towing; Did you ever see a flatbed picking up a car in a mall parking lot? If so, did you stop and ask them who and where the owner was?
All the security protects you from kids who want to joy ride. Nothing stops a professional thief. Unless there is a backup power source, all the GPS tracking they tout goes bye, bye with a snip through the battery cable.
