For fun I just tried to price out a X3 like the Limited w/ Lux II..Wow!! It would be more than what a Overland would be. Plus you have to pay a premium for maintenance stuff. My buddy has a 328i and it costs him about $1500 for a brake job, yikes!

Re: Grand Cherokee or Range Rover Evoque?

I spoke to two random RR owners I saw at a parking lot and spoke to them about their vehicle's reliability. Both of them said to have a 2nd car and not depend on RR alone. This was when I was looking to either purchase a BMW X5 or Porsche CS or RR. I love the looks of RR... they look stunning to me.

I have no idea about the reliability of the Evoque, but it does look quite different... like the new Jeep Cherokee. hehe... Perhaps, check out on Evoque forums.
It is too girly to me maybe because it was designed by Victoria Beckham.

Check out this vid. At least, it did not get stuck in sand and display "Serv 4WD" message.

Cheers,
-A

You're not alone in debating. For me it was between the Jeep GC, Cadillac SRX, and Toyota 4Runner. I settled on the Jeep after test driving a 2014 because it has the Cadillac tech with the 4runner 4x4. Toyota needs to work on their interior seems very dated NAV screen very small...

Because they offer the Gx460 for people who want it nicer.

The SRX IMO isn't even in the same league as those cars.

I compared a ton of vehicles, and nearly purchased an RX350. I bought he Jeep because I liked that it drove like a truck. RX350 and MKX were also VERY strong contenders for me. I liked 4Runner, but it wasn't as well equipped as I wanted, and GX460 was more money than I was comfortable with. The SRX was a flat out turd that was cramped inside, felt cheap, drove like crap, and generally had no redeeming qualities. I don't understand who buys them.

The GX460 is about $14,000 more comparably equipped to a summit V8. And it's body on frame. I've ridden in one and prefer the jeeps ride. Back seat is poor as well. Towing isn't fun from what my friend told me. That said the reliability is better and it's a tick quicker. Off road is good but it is not a Jeep. For me the price difference makes the choice easy. Mines a V6. Happy with it. The CRD 8 spd would make it no contest at all although the price difference is only about $9000 then.

I'd prefer a body on frame construction. They've got massive stiffness, and so hold up better in a rear end collision. My dad's Sport Trac did $35k worth of damage to the Mercedes GL that rear ended him, and it only messed up the little plastic on his license plate bulb, and popped a plastic clip for the rear bumper trim up. The clip didn't even break, it just need pushed back down.

I'd have the 4.6L V8 over the CRD. The 4.6L is a great engine, and I could overlook at economy gains for the great sounds and response of it.

I can't imagine how towing would be any issue in it, people tow with 4Runners quite well without the V8 all the time. The more powerful engine isn't going to make it worse.

My biggest gripe with the GX460 is the stupid side hinged door. Put in a normal liftgate, seriously. At least it has a power rear window.

Re: Grand Cherokee or Range Rover Evoque?

Almost bought x5.

Liked the 8 speed. Less powerful tho. Didnt like turbo engine. Dealer was 150 miles away.
Better offroad with jeep and options for the $.
After a year and 15 k miles my jeep has been great with only a new dash under warranty. No regrets.
I like a lot of little things about jeep like full size spare and hard drive and remote start.

RX350? Seriously? Is the real reason the fact that it matched your purse better?
Holy crap, that thing has no business being mentioned on this forum....imho of course...

The only car less expensive to maintain (for the first 4 years) is the BMW..no cost maintenance. After that, who knows...I think the next guy will worry about that. One of the deciding factor in purchasing that car is the historical data regarding resale values. Case in point, the X3 and the Summit had very similar transaction prices, at the moment, the X3 is trending at just over 10% higher resale than the Jeep (based on Manheim wholesale auction results).
The X5- it is long in the tooth, as it was introduced in February 2007 and essentially unchanged since then. There is a new body coming out very shortly. Supposed to be bigger and more refined.

X3 and X5 both look boring.

I didn't need major offroad ability. Just wanted a luxurious, spacious CUV with a high quality interior and great features. I don't have any insecurities where I need to have a macho car to compensate. Just need good transport, with the ability to get to/from the ski slopes.

The RX350 was an awesome car, rode great, super high quality, but in the end it didn't really feel special, the rear glass sloped in heavily meaning it cut into cargo/dog room, it didn't have the BAMF (big ass moonroof), and it just rode soft and car-like, and the Jeep rode more truck like, and I felt like it'd be better for taking skiing, camping, kayaking, etc. RX350's AWD system never really got much mention, just that it was offered, which made me doubtful about its ability to handle snow at the ski lodge. Nothing more embarrassing than being stuck in your parking spot at the ski lodge.

If I hadn't driven the Jeep before the Lexus, I'd have probably ended up with the Lexus, and enjoyed the huge advantage in resale values.

I liked the BMWs as well, but X3 was too small and 35is were too hard to come by, and X5 I never found one I could see owning. Plus, no BMW dealership in town, means an hour each way for service. Not gonna mess around with that.
