Grand Cherokee Overland - White - Rail Dust?

I'm in a 2014 Overland and I know that rail dust on white vehicles is a thing. But after 3 years and 46k miles should it be this bad? Is this an issue for the dealer or should I just go the iron-x route... please see attached picture and advise....Thanks!!

I used to detail and you just can't avoid this on white cars. I'd just get a clay bar and use some elbow grease.

I've heard Iron-X works pretty darn well for rail dust as well, but wow I hope that doesn't happen anytime soon to my car!

Give it the iron x, clay bar, wash really well and a layer or two of a good sealant or wax. If you have the equipment a machine polish after the wash. Regardless, the iron x and clay bar should be done asap to stop the effects of the particles that are now embedded in the clear coat.

'rail dust' should be on horizontal surfaces like hood/roof, top of fender etc.

whatever you have going on is from the wheels/road grime - wash it more than once a year and wax

it gets washed and wax often outside the 3-4 months of winter...

its not only on the door panels its mostly on the rear and trunk... nothing on hood or roof

maybe its not "rail dust" ... but it looks just like rust

I hate that sh$t. My wifes White VW/CC 2011 gets that all the time. NEVER a White car again. Although hers never looked as bad as your photo. Hers is on the bottom 1/3 of the car mostly on the sides.

Re: Grand Cherokee Overland - White - Rail Dust?

Rail dust -- never before heard of this. But then again this is my first white car. I'll be watching closely for it.

Added: here is a quick definition of rail dust. I had to look it up.

Quote:
Rail Dust

Rail dust is a dust created by trains. When the metal wheels of the train run on the metal rails, the rubbing creates small particles of metal that fly into the air. Rail dust is a problem for cars and trucks because most are transported by train (rail) from the factory to a city. Rail dust lands on the horizontal surfaces of the car, and the metal particles are hot and adhere to the paint and glass surfaces. Then when the rail dust gets wet from rain, snow, or even just dew it rusts and creates tiny little rust spots which are quite visible on white, yellow, beige or light colored cars.

You will also get the same thing if you live in a state that uses road salt in the winter. I notice it more on vertical surfaces than on horizontal. And it's very visible on any color.

It's also known as environmental fallout.
