Grand Cherokee Paint?

Hello all, new member and hopefully soon I will own my first Jeep.

I really like the 2014 Summit, but after owning a Black Ford Territory for the last 2 years that seems to scratch and chip just by walking past it or looking at it, I am reluctant to go back into another dark coloured car.
I can only presume that Jeep will be no different to Ford and use a standard primer/under coat colour across all cars regardless of the final colour. In regards to my Territory it was Silhouette (black) with a standard white undercoat that made every little mark and chip really stand out. This would be greatly reduced if they could use a dark undercoat for dark colours and the white for the light coloured cars but its just money and profits.

So I was planning on going to a Cashmere or Billet on the new Summit but am now told that theses colours are not available? Not sure about the Cashmere since it shows as a colour on the website but I am now told it is not available. So could be something to do with being located in Perth, Western Australia and only 200 Summits being released here in Australia??

I am liking the picture of the Auburn Pearl Coat because it is a bit different to the White Black and silvers out there but once again I don't want a nice looking car for the first month or so before road rash and door dingers have it looking like crap.

So I guess my long winded question to you experience owners - how does the paint work stand up considering they are also proper 4x4?
I understand there is no paint anywhere that would be resistant to all stone chips and scratches - just hoping for something that I don't need to wrap in cotton wool every time it comes out of the garage.

From what I can see the colour choice for the Summit is
Auburn Pearl Coat
Brilliant Black Crystal Clear Coat
Deep Cherry Red Pearl Coat
Granite Crystal Pearl Coat
Are all dark that would give that contrasting difference between the undercoat
And I really don't want want the Bright White either.

Cheers

Mark

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

As you have in the general WK2 section instead of the export section where most Aussies, most readers of this will have no idea what a Territory is. For non Aus and NZ readers, it is a soft sided SUV about the size of a GC.

We had a black Pajero, and my one comment on colour, apart from no Cashmere (I hate that colour) was that we are not to have a black car again. We have the Granite Chrystal, so still dark, but will do a better job of being less noticeable with scratches etc...
I wanted Silver as it shows dirt and scratches the least, this is not an option for the Summit.

Where are you seeing Auburn Pearl Coat as an option? It is not listed on the website.
New 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee - The Ultimate Search Engine
The options listed are
Deep Cherry Red
Cashmere
Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl
Bright White
Granite Chrystal.

You will have less options as not many cars were brought in, and no doubt many sold.

I am probably going to get ours done with Ceramic Pro coating. I think most of these are BS to their major claims, but for $550 instead of the $1300 the dealer tried to charge, I will give it a go as I can see it will help a little.
If this is type of thing interests you see here - Perth Paint Protection Applicators - Nano Shine

Export section where most Aussies are is here - Export Grand Cherokee 2011+ - Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

Thanks for the reply SNUKE, I was thinking of posting in the Export section but then thought that the paint work should be the same world wide and I was interested in hearing how it was holding up in all conditions.
Am I going to end up with deep scratches down the sides when I take it down a narrow track and a leaf touches it - like the Ford, or will it hold up to a little punishment and come good with a polish?
Reading a few post where new owners are commenting on imperfections in the paint but I cant find much on the durability?

The Auburn has actually been offered as an option by a couple of dealers here in Perth and I am pretty sure it showed up on a list somewhere here and wk2jeep but unfortunately I cant seem to find it again at the moment add a link, however I did save the list for future reference which I will attempt to attach

Agree my first choice would have been the Billet which is unfortunately not an option on the Summit.
Since they are all saying that it will be an special order with a 12 - 14 week delivery time, and I am reading the 2015 will be available around that time? Just wondering if it is worth waiting until the June/July and seeing what changes do come though.

I had the Opti-Coat Ceramic clear coat Paint Protection | About Opti-Coat Ceramic Clear Coating put onto the Ford - $3500 it ended up costing me!
Around $2000 for the Opti-Coat and the rest in prep work because the ceramic coatings will apparently highlight any marks if applied over the top.
It did make the car a little easier to wash but other than that, I feel it was a complete waste of time and money!

Was then looking into getting the car wrapped or even re-sprayed, but it got to the stage when I said enough was enough - how much time and money do you keep on throwing at something.

Besides really love the looks of the new Grand Cherokees and would much rather one of them parked in the garage

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

Wow, that is pricey for Opticaot, quotes from an applicators here are $550, but yeah probably plus preparation. Was that done by the dealer or separate detailer?

That attachment you posted is for US, so not relevant for us.
If you have to order, then it is 4-5 months from order to delivery.
MY15 should go into production just after mid-year, we might see them about Oct at earliest but more likely Nov or Dec.

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

That is absurdly high for Opticoat application, even with a complete paint compound beforehand. This is not a 4 figure job...

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

The Opti-Coat was regrettably done by Freedom Car Care in Kinross (North Side of Perth) He also damaged the back passengers door in the process and then denied doing it!
$1850 for 3 coats of the Opti-Coat and $1650 for the cut and polishing!
Only 2 Authorised dealers here in Perth and would not give either of them any more work
Giving that the Opti-Coat could not even protect the paint from Fords washing the car with a broom while in for its last service, I would never go down that road again

Thinking the list was for the US considering it states that the Tow Hitch and plugs was standard on the Summit but that doesn't seem to be the case here in Perth - but I would have though the exterior colours would have been the same?

So if I was to order something now, I would be getting the dregs that are left over from the 200 that were released mid last year and need to wait until June/July to take possession - If I was to wait until mid year and place an order for the MY15, I would hopefully get a better choice and the added benefit of any mods made (Minor as they maybe)

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

UGH...you got hosed. I mean, any detailer can apply Opti-coat for you. Hell...you could have done it yourself.

You can't layer Opti-coat....it won't bond to itself. What a ripoff.

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

Things we have to deal with here in Perth - People charging top dollar for shoddy work!

As you can see on his website 2 or 3 coat aplications? New Car Package

Funny you should say that SW03ES the other "Authorised Dealer" here in Perth told me that 2 coats is maximum because the 3rd does little or nothing when re-doing the front end after someone pulled out on me!

Wouldnt have cared about getting ripped off on the application if the actual product had lived up to the claims and protected the paint

Yeah it's not a miracle product. If it gets washed with a broom it's going to scratch...

My two cents from a bril black(dads) and mineral grey (mine, also similar to the billet color) owner. Go with the lightest color you like. Two days after a wash I always say in my head, dammit, should have gone with white. Plus, I think the white ones look great anyways. Lastly, mine has a few trail scars that I feel wouldn't be as noticeable with white. Anywho, still happy with the paint so far compared to others cars Ive owned.

Re: Grand Cherokee Paint?

Thanks Chris
I was actually informed by the dealer late yesterday afternoon that they are going to do a limited run of Summits in the Cashmere, so that the colour I will end up with. Good thing is that there wont be too many other on the road over here!

I do like the the pictures of Dave in PA Limited that he posted 2014 Limited Cashmere so fingers crossed I will be happy with it when it gets here

So I guess all I can do now is try to source all the other accessories I am wanting while I am waiting for it to arrive sometime in July
