Grand Cherokee REDESIGN delayed till 2018

From Sergio's own lips "In addition, the CEO said the next-generation Grand Cherokee, which had been due in 2017, may be delayed to allow it to be jointly developed with a higher-end Grand Wagoneer. The two vehicles would share a platform."

Re: Grand Cherokee refresh delayed till 2018

Is there anything with this company that isn't delayed? I read that same article and it will suprise me to even see it in 2018. It made it sound like development had not even started. from what I read in the past the wagoneer was supposed to be out in 2013 then 2015 and now they claim 2018. It seems like they focus on one product at a time. Right now its their 2017 minivan that was supposed to be out for 2015. This is just an outside view from what I have read but they seem very disorganized to me. I can completely understand them trying to merge with another company.

Re: Grand Cherokee refresh delayed till 2018

There are 2 main areas FCA must focus on to align their launches appropriately.

1.) Keep feeding the market with small updates about what's coming.

2.) Internally it's about vehicle platform strategy to save costs.

Both must properly align. Decisions can change rapidly so they can't just stamp a confirmed date of release years before. Mall car manufacturers play this game.

Re: Grand Cherokee refresh delayed till 2018

I think instead of "refresh" you mean to say "complete redesign" or "next generation". Had me confused about the refreshed 2016 due in November.

Re: Grand Cherokee refresh delayed till 2018

From a business perspective, this likely change in schedule makes a lot of sense for cost control and production efficiency. Disappointing for those of us who would be "due" for a next JGC around the time of the original schedule, but if it results in a better product, I'm onboard.

Re: Grand Cherokee redesign delayed till 2018

I did mean redesign, not just refresh. With the amount of pressure to ensure 5th generation success, it wouldn't surprise me that FCA wants to make sure it's right before any release (hence the 2018 to 2019 redesign).

Thread title should b changed to "Redesign" or "All New". "Refresh" is still happening as planned for MY16.

Exactly, WK2 is kicking ass in the market, all the others are playing catch up. This a good platform, why screw it up.

From an owners standpoint you want the platform to last a long time so you can get parts, especially the electronic stuff in 10-15 yrs, so the longer the WK2 is made the better.

Re: Grand Cherokee refresh delayed till 2018

It makes sense. Simplifying supply chain and development by unifying the "architectures" of two cars, rather than one and new CAFE requirements that demand a new type of powertrain. Better for me and my trade in plans. Also, even the previous vehicles WJ and WK seemed to have a longer production run, especially the WJ.

But it seems like all those who might be dissatisfied, now have a change to buy a hellcat of an SRT Jeep...

Re: Grand Cherokee REDESIGN delayed till 2018

I agree with all comments, but I think the question for me why is this decision just being made now for a vehicle that was supposed to launch in 18 months or so? This seems to indicate to me that this is probably at least 3 years away maybe more. I mean how long have they been talking about this Wagoneer? I think it was 2013 then 2015 and now 2018 or later?
